What Hacker News says?
Yeah, I was also excited about Scala. Went to a conference in 2010; eventually took the Odersky course and tried it for some personal projects. I ended up abandoning it, and for me Bruce Eckels captured a big part of why, talking about it as a "landscape of cliffs". [1] Every time I thought I knew what was going on, I tripped over something and ended up in a chasm. With much study and effort I could dig myself out o…

HN discussion> go and find the official documentation for X and RTFM. Yes and no. The official documentation can be obtuse and bad for new learners. (I'm looking at you, gradle[1]). Ideally, the official documentation includes tutorials, but also three other forms: 1) how-to guides showing the steps for accomplishing a common goal. Think of them as extended FAQ answers. 2) simple reference docs. Your typical api-centered doc, or…

HN discussion> But I just mean that not every language needs to aim to be a top 5 language. I wonder about the extent to which this is true. One of my primary considerations in picking the language for a product is economic fit. Once you get outside of the top 10 or so, I think you need an especially strong set of niche-specific positives to offset the negatives of a small community. As an example, for fun I've been working on a…

HN discussionNo, Gradle's documentation is really terrible. There is just no easy path to learn it - you will with time and pain learn a bit of the interface, but deep down it remains mostly unfanthonable, unnecessarily complex and filled with strange quirks. Bruce Eckel had pretty much the same experience as myself: https://www.bruceeckel.com/2021/01/02/the-problem-with-gradl... Everone "learns" Gradle by copy-pasting snippets…
