What Hacker News says?

  1. Fair enough, that is quite unfortunate. So I've always avoided using the Windows Store on my Windows machines, I think I managed to get WSL2 installed without using it lol. So I'm not sure on the details, but do the steps on https://www.cursor.com/how-to-install-extension bypass clicking "I agree" since they just download and drag? Because from what I can tell, the example in https://www.elgaronline.com/edcollchap/e…

  3. First of all, their docs link to the market place of ms: https://www.cursor.com/how-to-install-extension Which is basically an article to use an extension in a way that’s basically forbidden use. If that was not bad enough the editor also told you to install certain extensions if certain file extensions were used that were also against the tos of the extension. And basically cursor can just be using the vsix marketp…

  5. Install Cursor ( https://cursor.com ), go into Cursor Settings and disable everything but Claude, then open Composer (Ctrl/Cmd + I). Paste in your exact command above. I bet it’ll do something pretty close to what you’re looking for.

  11. Cursor see it coming - it's why they're moving to the web and mobile[0] The bigger issue is the advantage Anthropic, Google and OpenAI have in developing and deploying their own models. It wasn't that long ago that Cursor was reading 50 lines of code at a time to save on token costs. Anthropic just came out and yolo'd the context window because they could afford to, and it blew everything else away. Cursor could rel…

  13. It seems like they put a proxy in front of OpenVSX: https://cursor.com/help/customization/extensions However, statements around the internet (and in these comments) are less than definitive as to whether a) that proxy has a cache that was compromised; b) that proxy has select extensions which can be published directly to it by hand (one of which was compromised); c) other.

  15. This is from the Cursor blog [1] linked in the description, but repeating it here in case it's useful to anyone: ------ Check whether you are impacted The malicious extension appends the attacker's public key, labeled svc-telemetry, to your SSH authorized keys. To check for it: On macOS, run: grep -qs svc-telemetry ~/.ssh/authorized_keys && echo "svc-telemetry key found" || echo "No key found; machine not impacted"…

  17. Apparently it is public: https://cursor.com/help/customization/extensions They use a proxy in front of OpenVSX…purportedly for better security, the irony writes itself.

  23. Even more confusing is apparently Cursor Marketplace is OpenVSX + their own proxy to add extensions on top[0], so there are at least two possible cases: 1. The compromised version was present on OpenVSX itself, and Cursor Marketplace proxied to it 2. The compromised version was on Cursor's proxy, not OpenVSX itself [0] https://cursor.com/help/customization/extensions

  27. Cursor always used OpenVSX for VSCode extensions. There is separate "Cursor Marketplace" ( https://cursor.com/marketplace ) but it installs "Cursor Plugins" which are exclusively Cursor feature not related to VSCode, and Anthropic had never released a "Cursor Plugin"
