Why HN links it

HN readers link Dan Grossman's blog for practical posts on his own projects: a step-by-step startup launch write-up, email alerts for Hacker News, and a post on which startups host on Azure or Y Combinator hosting.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 6 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. It boggles my mind why anyone would use MailChimp. The most important trait for a good organization is ethics. When they acquired Mandrill, they did the same to PAYING customers[1]. They even turned off comments on the blog post of the announcement. And ever since they did these shady things, they super-charged their SEO to hide any mention of this fiasco. If you do a quick Google search for "mailchimp mandrill" you…

  5. http://www.awio.com or http://www.dangrossman.info/folio/ if you'd like to take a look. I'm extremely open about my business. I've thought about writing this type of article to share on HN before, but it always comes across as bragging instead of sharing so I can the idea soon after starting. This is not an overnight success story. I earned my first paycheck on the internet when I was 15 or so, 10 years ago. I've ha…

  7. Unfortunately this is standard MailChimp way of doing things ever since they screwed over paying customers and merged with Mandrill [1]. They are the opposite of a transparent organization - they are the GoDaddy of this business. (I was super pissed once they removed their status page..WTF). We hit these errors a few months ago with our clients and I put up a roadmap to move all of them off the terrible joke that Ma…

  11. In 99.9% of cases, a $5 VPS would have been able to handle the Reddit/HN traffic, if only it were configured better. If you "yum/apt-get install httpd" and call it a day, your default configuration will cause Apache to spawn more processes than there is available memory as soon as you get more than a few visits at once, and the disk swapping will kill the box. If you set reasonable limits for the number of processes…

  13. I did my own little analysis of Hacker News readers based on the ~20,000 of you that visited my blog recently: http://www.dangrossman.info/2012/08/21/what-hacker-news-user... Of course, I didn't survey people or have access to demographic profiles from other sites, so it's just a breakdown of systems. To summarize, the average HN reader runs Chrome 21 on a pre-Retina MacBook.

  15. Cash-strapped startups are not choosing DigitalOcean, they're choosing AWS. That's their point of comparison. Your assertion was that 100EUR would be a barrier to startups, not just to yourself. http://www.dangrossman.info/2012/09/24/who-hosts-the-y-combi...

  17. Instead of a $99 custom button, what about a sub-$99 Android tablet? You can put them anywhere you'd put the button, and leave your home control app running with the screen set to never turn off. Turning on/off a light with a touch will then be no more effort than flicking a light switch -- there's nothing to take out of your pocket, no waiting for an app to open. This is how my home works. I built the app that runs…

  19. Depends what you consider a startup, I guess. I support around 40,000 users and half a million a year in revenue from my web apps and ecommerce sites. You could say I've been OPP since I was 15, when I was making enough from websites I'd built to pay hosting costs, cable modem service, and buy my own computers. I'm 25 now, have never been cash flow negative in my life, no debt. I have no cofounder or employees, I ow…

  21. This is paired with a provision that states must simplify their sales tax codes before they can collect from out-of-state sellers, though it's not hard to see how they could stay within the requirements of the bill and still have overly complicated rules. 23. Yes, the "internet sales tax bill" (marketplace fairness act) passed the Senate this week. It has White House support, so only needs to pass the House to become law. A summary: http://www.dangrossman.info/2013/04/24/what-startups-need-to...

  27. I started my business in earnest freshman year of college, 2003/2004, with virtually no money. I developed a handful of SaaS webapps with a couple tens of thousands of users I support on my own. It's a lifestyle business, with no employees and no grand ambitions... just enough work for a comfortable schedule and good enough pay that I'd never trade it in for regular employment. http://www.dangrossman.info/category/p…
