  6. https://colibri.social/faq#where-is-my-data-stored I've just added a new FAQ entry to explain this in a bit more detail. > But that’s not where you want your chats now is it? E2EE? And how does it keep it all private since apparently the Bluesky bros haven't figured that part out? It honestly depends. Right now, Colibri is meant to function for communities that are public anyway. If you're a streamer, an open source…

  8. Yeah, capability for group permissions is a key part of the work happening on permissioned data in ATproto right now. https://dholms.leaflet.pub/3meluqcwky22a https://dholms.leaflet.pub/3mfrsbcn2gk2a https://dholms.leaflet.pub/3mguviy6iks2a https://dholms.leaflet.pub/3mhj6bcqats2o

  9. Yeah, apps wouldn't be able to only listen to the firehose. There are some proposals for private files. However, I'm outside the AtProto world so not sure what exactly the suggested implementations are. I just hope they give enough control. I think the technology could potentially be used for way more than microblogging. I would love to use webapps that store the data on my devices and share it with specific people.…

Read the "perm'd data diaries": https://dholms.leaflet.pub/3mhj6bcqats2o - It sounds like they have already picked this rough sketch as the basis. My take is that (1) public vs private will be an app level choice, and user if the app passes that choice through and (2) this sketch is insufficient for many applications, being on the simpler side of the design spectrum.

  11. I'm a fan of smaller communities that are semi-open: invite-only, but invites aren't that hard to get. Lobsters works that way. The BlueSky folks are designing "permission spaces" [1] that might be used to build that, though it's a bit early to say. [1] https://dholms.leaflet.pub/3mhj6bcqats2o

  12. Daniel Holmgren from bluesky is working on permissioned data for ATP [1]. Once that lands tangled will probably add unlimited private repos and extra CI compute on the first party servers as a paid feature. Self hosting will be free forever. That is not a threat to monetization plans because most people would pay a reasonable price ($10 month) to avoid dealing with infra. Remember that hardware is cheap so margins c…

  13. Chat sessions on atproto apps are not generally public. For example, the Bluesky app has private chat and Germ ( https://germnetwork.com/ ) is an E2EE messaging app built on atproto as its identity system. Regarding the open data— we do believe that anyone should be able to publish in the open, and building should be permissionless much like the web. But we don't think all data should be public, and clearly there is…

No disagreement there. If you want to keep updated on the permissioned data protocol you can follow daniel's leaflets https://dholms.leaflet.pub/ ( https://dholms.leaflet.pub/rss ) The public side is extremely important for agents though. Agents need up to date public information to do their job. Every other service is going closed. Public information and activity should be a commons.
