For people that want to try OpenMOSIX out, take a look at this site http://dirk.eddelbuettel.com/quantian.html He has a distro that is called Quantian, with a big collection of science tools added. Shame it's Sunday, I'll need to wait a week to pull it down and see how well it flys.

HN discussionCurrently, this comment is heavily downvoted, which I do not understand. If Julia warrants mentioning as having a lispy core, then it’s at least as valid to point out R’s deeply lisp-inspired (and technical implementation based) heritage. I mean, scratch the surface on any of the FFI docs, and you’ll see that SEXPRs are right there lurking barely beneath the surface: http://dirk.eddelbuettel.com/code/rcpp.html EDIT:…

HN discussionYou are asking for a "thesis", for a unique proposition. Well, maybe Perl 5's backwards-compatibility can be marketed, (or will emerge anyway, without any marketing), as a key advantage. "These 20 year old Perl 5 scripts still run without any modifications on the new machine. Amazing!..." There are not many languages that have this property of long-term stability. One of them is R , see recent Blogpost "Ode to R sta…

HN discussion"the horsing around to get the data in and out" seems to be the key factor. An analysis of BLAS libraries' performance across several architectures [1] showed that GPU-based calculation only approached implementations like Goto BLAS with matrix dimensions well up into the thousands. That's just one example, but there seems to be a fair bit of overhead in getting the data to and from the GPU. [1] http://dirk.eddelbue…

HN discussionRegarding scripting, analysis may be of more use than "bots": http://dirk.eddelbuettel.com/code/rblpapi.html Other than that, I recommend opening a debit account with TIAA-CREF.org and going from there.
