What Hacker News says?
Notch, if you're reading this, my deepest sympathy. I understand the devastation of losing a parent; I lost my mother about a year ago. I'm still not "back to normal" and don't know if I ever will be. I used to do art, music, and comedy, and even practiced my religion, often just for her. I loved to make her laugh and it was so easy to make her proud. In the past year, I have done none of that stuff and don't know w…

HN discussionThis is amazing stuff - thanks much! I made a slightly more readable HTML version (with linked TOC and back links) here -> http://bit.ly/lSLTVT This could be converted to an ePub I think, with the linked TOC. If this a problem let me know and I will take it down, or maybe you could post it on http://edweissman.com/53640595 to get the linked TOC?

HN discussion...it would be nice if titles linked to their comments... I purposely omitted references to the original Hacker News threads because I wanted the book to stand on its own. Hope this helps: http://edweissman.com/index-from-the-best-of-edw519-to-the-o... [Many thanks to everyone in this thread for the well wishes. You guys are helping to make my day!]

HN discussionCheck out chapter 4 of his book, "Work Habits". Available at http://edweissman.com/53640595 and as a PDF (top of the linked page). To summarize: Use simple tools and eliminate distractions. At the end of the day, code and refactor away from the computer (on printouts). This forms the basis of the next day's work at the computer.

HN discussionI think edw519 used to write in length about 'just-in-time-learning', calling it 'pull learning' (as opposed to 'push'). See, for instance, comment 71 in [1]. My rabbit-holing doesn't always resemble your approach; I often end up reading a book on a topic I'm just interested in, without a particular project or feeling of lacking knowledge. However, I try to transition myself into more JIT-learning/pull-learning styl…

HN discussionWhat you said reminds me of something I read from edw512's book ( http://edweissman.com/53640595 ) > Buyers of software products, like small children, hear one word more than any other: "no". "No, it can't be done." "No we don't do that." "No, if you did that it would screw up everything else." "No, that's stupid" It doesn't matter if you're right, all that matters is that you're just another person saying "no". > Y…
