Why HN links it

HN commenters link this blog for posts on ClojureScript tooling: scripting with Planck, running a CLJS REPL on a phone with Ambly, and working around the macros problem. The comments cite the posts without judging the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 4 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Yes and no. You can write macros for which the source is ClojureScript, but they need to be kept separate. Here is a stab I took at explaining that subject: http://blog.fikesfarm.com/posts/2015-06-19-portable-macro-mu... There are no plans for the same backend AFAIK.

  3. There are a few solutions for scripting with Clojure http://blog.fikesfarm.com/posts/2015-08-01-planck-scripting.... Personally I wouldn't script in Clojure. If something is simple enough to be a script I'd use bash or Python and leave Clojure for writing non-trivial programs for which startup time is not an issue

  5. It is _extremely_ viable: The core REPL functionality is based on a few ClojureScript lines from Joel Martin's initial work for something similar for Node. In short, to make an Android version would involve just running a JavaScript engine and hooking up a little bit of UI to send strings to it, and get strings back out of it. Replete is open source... feel free to steal heavily from it. Look at how simple and rough…

  7. I actually suspect that you can make a solid app with ClojureScript _today_, QTTT being the thing that makes me think this is so. https://github.com/mfikes/qttt#react-native-port Also, Facebook has shipped apps based on React Native. The aspect that is rough is the ClojureScript tooling. This post attempts to cover where we are with tooling: http://blog.fikesfarm.com/posts/2015-07-06-clojurescript-wit...

  11. Bootstrapped ClojureScript refers to the idea that ClojureScript can compile itself. Evidently Lisp was the first and ClojureScript was probably the most recent to accomplish this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-hosting But then there is also the concept that a ClojureScript app which is going to make use of a REPL needs to do some additional work to bootstrap the ClojureScript runtime. Normally when you ship a…

  13. No. ClojureScript works with React Native, and in that case you can use the Figwheel REPL. See http://cljsrn.org Ambly can be useful in other situations where you are not building a React Native app, but still want ClojureScript driving things. For an example with Ejecta, see http://blog.fikesfarm.com/posts/2017-04-29-clojurescript-eje...

  17. Even after finishing the readme I'm not clear on what exactly this does. At the very least it looks useful for working around the macros problem[1]. Mind explaining what mileage you got out of it? [1]: http://blog.fikesfarm.com/posts/2015-09-07-messing-with-macr...

  19. ClojureScript is these days selfhosting. If you want to write and run small scripts you could give Planck a try (ClojureScript REPL). The startup time is much smaller. http://blog.fikesfarm.com/posts/2015-08-22-planck-works.html
