I had a similar response when developing Polar but for Electron and the MS app store. I write a few posts about it here: https://getpolarized.io/2019/02/13/microsoft-blocking-electr... https://getpolarized.io/2019/02/28/dear-app-stores-dont-bloc... It took me four weeks to unblock me and I finally had a chance to re-publish to the MS app store and I'm waiting for their final approval of my app. YES.. I can develop t…

HN discussionIf you're interested other Elsevier shenanigans they now encrypt your PDFs that you add to Mendeley so you don't even have access to your OWN research. https://getpolarized.io/2019/01/23/mendeleys-encrypted-repos...

HN discussionPWAs are becoming reasonable for mobile devices and could really help with some apps for initial distribution and usage. I might implement the first version of mobile reading within Polar ( https://getpolarized.io/ ) by using a PWA. The general idea is to have both a PWA and a native app. The PWA gets the users addicted and then you can have an 'install app' button within the PWA. If your app is insanely complicated…

HN discussion> Out of curiosity, what services and products are you paying for? To be fair you're asking the wrong person. I pay for a ton of products. I pay for IntelliJ which I think is $150 per year. HubSpot which will probably get $1k from me... I pay for Gmail... I think it's $4 per user per month? TeamCity, CircleCI ... NYTimes (yeah, I actually pay). ... but I do think you're right here. I'm actually legitimately curious…

HN discussionI've been considering this but I'm not sure if it fits my use case. My main thing would be reading pdf's - specifically with Polar ( https://getpolarized.io/ ). I use it for keeping track of notes/annotations and syncing across devices. Does anyone know if it would work with ReMarkable? (Or does anyone have a Polar alternative?)

HN discussionWhat we need are VIABLE solutions to social platforms... While people are deleting Facebook they're NOT deleting Instagram. Additionally, we're still vulnerable to a lot of the same attacks that impacted us in the 2016 election. These networks still hold your private connection graph, know what you're reading, can target you precisely with ads, etc. I'm building an app named Polar which is an offline-first document…

HN discussionI'm the author of Polar ( https://getpolarized.io/ ) that uses PDF.js as its PDF backend. This is a somewhat big update for PDF.js which is kind of cool in that they haven't really been updating it as aggressively as they usually do in the last year or so. It's a bit frustrating to work with though. The entire concept of rendering a PDF via JS is fascinating but actually using the API has been a huge pain for us. We…

HN discussionI've been heads down building an app which relies on Google Chrome and I go back and forth on this. Polar is an app for managing your reading. It also supports advanced features like caching web pages locally, annotating PDFs, tagging the documents you're reading, etc. https://getpolarized.io/ It's based on Electron and I've been going deep into Chrome internals as well as experimenting with Chrome extensions. It's…

HN discussionI ported Polar ( https://getpolarized.io/ ) over to a PWA about a year ago. It's kind of a nightmare due to both Google and Apple messing things up. PWAs could be an amazing platform but both companies are really messing it up. Apple is trying to kill them by giving plausible explanations as to why they can't have PWAs. Security this, blah blah blah. There's no reason they can't have PWAs work well in Safari other t…

HN discussionWe're shipping a new version of Polar ( https://getpolarized.io/ ) this weekend that is sort of closer to the roam/zettelkasten idea of managing notes. Here's a video explaining the new functionality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M6jNlairGc Basically all the documents you read can have tags. So you can manage all your documents via whatever tag you want. You can then read those documents in Polar directly and hi…

HN discussionThis is awesome. I'm working on something that would VERY much benefit from open access journals: https://getpolarized.io/ With Polar you maintain all your research in one place and can annotate and share with other users. One thing I want to add is the ability to sync up with open access sources to fetch PDFs, get metadata for them, find related PDFs and research, etc. Going to go heads down into this today.

HN discussionI've thought that we could potentially build an end to end encrypted datastore within Polar and possibly add IPFS support to potentially help with this issue. HN discussionI'm working on Polar: https://getpolarized.io/ It's been out for about 1.2 years now and we're really starting to nail some important features. JUST about to post a new release now. COVID19 is having us pivot a bit in that we're going to experiment with collaborative group reading in the hopes that students can work more efficiently with their colleagues without having to leave home.
