  11. Generics do work to lower prices, at least over time. I've been on two medications that, when started, their patents were about to expire. They still cost a small fortune, $700 to $1000/month on retail cost without insurance. Over the course of about 6 years, the generics were introduced and were also initially very expensive, but the competition gradually lowered prices and they're now sub-$100/month for the generi…

  13. For regulatory reasons, US drug list prices are completely detached from the actual price you end up paying (assuming you do a bit of research). See e.g. https://www.goodrx.com/hydroxychloroquine ($20 for 60x200mg)

  14. I understand that argument.I hadn't thought of the issue of insulin being a biologic, so true generics aren't likely, hence biosimilars. None of this justifies a 10x+ price increase on the same product over 20 years of course. By the way that same site had an interesting article breaking down costs normalized by insulin unit https://www.goodrx.com/blog/how-much-does-insulin-cost-compa... By that table and some assum…

  15. My understanding it that they are out of patent, but regulations make it hard for new players to enter the market. Since the number of companies making them are so limited, even the generics cost a lot. For example, Basaglar is a "generic" of Lantus, but it's still expensive. The Lily and Novo Nordisk coupons seem to have quite short availability windows, according to several years of reading the various related subreddits. 28. You only covered the bolus requirements. You also need a basal insulin for Type-1 diabetes (unless you're on an insulin pump, which is an entirely different class of expense), so something like Tresiba ($505) ( https://www.goodrx.com/tresiba ) or Lantus ($357). Still not $1300/mo, but your price is also using temporary rebates and coupons, which certainly aren't always available.

  29. Depending on how many units/day you need. There's a great website for finding low priced insulin: https://www.goodrx.com/humalog $68.38 for five 3ml cartridges of 100 units/ml. So if you need 100 units/day (that's on the high end), that's two weeks worth.
