HN discussionThere's a company doing that for stovetops, which I found really interesting ( https://www.impulselabs.com )! Unfortunately, when training on a desktop it's _relatively_ continuous power draw, and can go on for days. :/

HN discussionI've been eyeing a battery-backed induction stove for my next remodel. The point is that it can charge itself on a regular 120V outlet while producing as much as 10kW output, far more than a plug-in stove. Something like https://copperhome.com/products/charlie or https://www.impulselabs.com/

HN discussionThe term "smart appliance" has changed radically since the 1960s [0]; it didn't necessarily mean "ubiquitous connectivity, data collection, building a profile on the occupants and monetizing it with advertisers/data brokers". We only end up at that through decades of legislative inaction. Your second point is about the extent to which manufacturers are allowed lock their product behind proprietary interfaces (protec…

HN discussionFirst thing that came to mind was an ImpulseLabs Toaster, powered by their high-output battery. Maybe you should reach out to the leadership and introduce yourself? https://www.impulselabs.com/faqs

on “Ask HN: Should I try to manufacture toasters?”In the US. In the UK 2200W induction plates are readily available with a standard plug for ~£40, or if you spend a little more you can go to 3kW - [0] which is about the limit of most domestic circuits but is hotter than most gas hobs. If you _really_ want more than that you can go a little mental and use one with an integrated battery which can push out 10 kW [1] [0] https://www.nisbets.co.uk/nisbets-essentials-sin…

on “Impulse Induction Stove: boils water in 40s and has backup battery for outages”I am in exactly the same place (my panels are 12yr old, which also means that I can't make any changes to the system without bringing it up to code, which means replacing it all, basically). I have been eyeing the Impulse Labs induction range[1] as a stopgap for one of the biggest pain points of long power outages (super expensive though, even with credits... and doesn't heat the house or keep the food in the fridge…

on “Extremists keep trying to sabotage the electrical grid. What if they succeed?”https://www.impulselabs.com/ achieves this by storing energy in a battery. 120V15A in to charge, 10kW out for short durations. I don't have one, but it's an interesting concept. That said, I don't know what's better, a massive lithium battery in the kitchen that can be set into thermal runaway, or a gas line. But also, most Japanese styles of cooking doesn't need those levels of power.

on “7.1 Earthquake in Japan”I bought a cheap Duxtop model & have been really enjoying it. Much more efficient than gas, and less need to run the stove vent which sucks all the conditioned house air up & pushes it outdoors. Heats very quick. The main downsides are some liability to trip breakers if I'm also running other appliances, and the induction coil is kind of small (7 inches?) so there's some hotspotting. This Impulse stove got submitted…

on “This induction stove is cool as hell”I have a Breville Control Freak (which is a plug-in induction stovetop) and it's amazing. Far better than gas on its own merits, and without the problems of combusting methane indoors. Moreover, Impulse now sells a full-on range: https://www.impulselabs.com/ with an integrated battery, so that it can be plugged into any standard 120v outlet. To my mind, and in my experience, the alternatives to gas today are amazing…

on “Switching to electric stoves can dramatically cut indoor air pollution”We've been using a Breville Control Freak, a plug-in induction stovetop, for a couple years, and it's amazing: https://www.breville.com/us/en/products/commercial/cmc850.ht... . Controlling the heat via single degrees is great. It brings the pan and food to temperature far faster than any gas stove I've ever used. It is expensive but not breathing in gas fumes is also nice. on “When the natural gas industry used the playbook from Big Tobacco”This is the referenced stove company: https://www.impulselabs.com/ They put a battery in an induction stove. Because of that, it can boil 1L of water about 10x faster than a gas stove, among other things. It's also a stealth way to distribute batteries and improve the grid.
