What Hacker News says?
Really? From what I gather from projects like RethinkDB or this: https://www.influxdata.com/the-open-source-database-business... open source is a forever struggling business model.

HN discussionThe Grafana Enterprise point is the most salient here. The answer is no, they wouldn't have been able to create closed source plugins for a commercial product. Only AGPL code. As I've stated before: copyleft licenses are an evolutionary dead end: https://www.influxdata.com/blog/copyleft-and-community-licen... . P.S. Hey Todd ;)

Both are general purpose languages, so of course they overlap. > Good luck rewritting all the big data tools from Java (Elasticsearch, Spark, Kafka, Hadoop, Neo4j, Deeplearning4j, Cassandra, Solr, Arrow, OrientDB) Cassandra ( https://scylladb.com ) and Kafka ( https://vectorized.io ) have already been rewritten once in C++, with massive latency and throughput improveme…

HN discussionI have been currently exploring the option of open sourcing a project of mine and have researched CLAs a bit, but would love to be corrected if mistaken. It is as simple - and it is not. You need to take care of special cases, like contributions from company employees in their free time (their company could still own rights to this work), people contributing other people's code (SO answers), patents and whatnot. For…

HN discussionSince the theme of this thread seems to be non-clojure alternatives, I'll point in the direction of InfluxData (formerly InfluxDB)'s new-ish Kapacitor project. While I'm unconvinced their custom JavaScripty DSL (TICKscript) is actually preferable to Clojure or even can be read without careful, quite LISP-like indentation, it is pretty similar in basic functionality to Riemann and is definitely not-Clojure* see: http…

HN discussionI view that as a significant negative impact to OSS. I have a strong preference for liberal licenses like MIT or Apache 2.0. Infectious licenses like copy-left put restrictions on it that make it less appealing as open source. I wrote a bit on it here: https://www.influxdata.com/blog/copyleft-and-community-licen...
