HN discussion> Difference is Sun was providing a "full stack" proprietary product including CPUs running a proprietary ISA, Unix OS, compiler, desktop environment and productivity apps. SPARC was not proprietary, buy fully licensable: * https://sparc.org Fujitsu sold their own SPARC servers for many years with their own CPUs, and many third-parties put Fujitsu SPARC CPUs into (e.g.) laptops: * https://jasoneckert.github.io/myblo…

HN discussionWhen I was evaluating ways to add comments to my blog on GitHub Pages, I quickly passed by Disqus because it was a 3rd party service that I didn't trust for reasons like this. Instead, I went with a tight solution that minimized 3rd party interaction: GitHub Discussions leveraged using the Giscus app ( https://jasoneckert.github.io/myblog/github-discussions-blog... ). You have to have a GitHub account to post commen…

HN discussionApple has always perpetuated a Cult of Mac since the Apple II days. I believe this is tactical from a marketing standpoint. Here is a detailed blog on it: https://jasoneckert.github.io/myblog/cult-of-mac/

HN discussionFirstly, I agree with your points here. And while other comments here have pointed out that not all hardware is supported yet (a valid criticism), I feel it's also important to note that the current user experience of Asahi on Apple Silicon is stellar (as has been since it was released in Alpha). I've been using Asahi for over 3 months now as my daily driver to do real development work ( https://jasoneckert.github.i…

HN discussionI actually do something similar on my personal site using this note that includes a purposeful typo: https://jasoneckert.github.io/site/about-this-site/ I'm hoping people catch that typo after reading "every single word, phrase, and typo (purposeful or not)" and smiled every time I've had someone post a PR with a fix for it (that I subsequently reject ;-)

HN discussionIn short, all apps run faster - I have some more detail in this blog post (which also includes a link to my original blog post with additional performance details): https://jasoneckert.github.io/myblog/fedora-asahi-remix/ I suspect this is primarily due to Linux being a more performance-optimized OS compared to macOS, which seems to have introduced a great deal of bloat over the years.

HN discussionIt was nice to see the bit in the video about the Tadpole SPARCbook 3000XT. They are incredibly rare compared to Sun desktop workstations, but a lot of fun. I wrote about the 3000ST model: https://jasoneckert.github.io/myblog/sparcbook3000st-the-coo...
