What Hacker News says?
Hah no, but maybe I should. The reason I haven't is that most of my work is just glue code. I use yt-dlp to do Youtube downloads, make use of the Discord, Slack and Telegram APIs to access those services. I run NNCP and the bots in systemd units, though at this point I should probably bake all of these into a VM and just bring it up on whichever cloud instance I want to act as ingress. Cloud IPs stay static as long…

HN discussionYes I believe one way to see what is happening is in fact our own mistake. We thought we could prevent those law of being signed but it was very naive. The only way you fight this is by moving forward and faster than them. Because their eternal weakness is that they are slow and somehow stupid. But tech oriented people got pretty lazy in the last 2 decades: - We let ISPs be the only gatekeeper of the Internet - We l…

HN discussionnncp [1, 2] is probably the best Sneakernet tool I've found. It's very UNIX-y which makes it pretty hard to operate if you're not technical but would also make it pretty easy to wrap around with a UI. You have to explicitly add a list of "neighbors" to your configuration and you can send "packets" either by spooling to file or using a TCP/Noise connection. You can also send data hop-by-hop and is e2e encrypted. [1]:…

HN discussionYeah agreed but I am just a bit skeptical about the one server as the single point of failure. Building on your idea, wouldn't using 'talk' over a private yggdrasil mesh (so not connected to public peers) [0] or tinc be an elegant solution ? What I am not sure is I believe you still need to have at least 1 peer with a fixed IP address (so not a mobile phone) for a yggdrasil to work. - [0] https://www.complete.org/ea…

HN discussionIf you want a "modern" take on UUCP, there's NNCP [1] which encrypts packets and offers a TCP transfer mode out of the box. It also has the concept of multicast arenas to send packets to multiple hosts at a time. There's no real concept of paths, but you can write one atop NNCP if you'd like. [1a]: https://www.complete.org/nncp/ a site with info about NNCP [1b]: http://www.nncpgo.org/ the official site. There's also…

HN discussionThe original hackers are the ones from the Lisp Machines and ITS/WAIS under the PDP10. The rest of these are just PC wannabes. Actual hacker knownledge: http://www.inwap.com/pdp10/hbaker/hakmem/hakmem.html Under PC's, today, great hackers should be the guy behing https://t3x.org , the one behind EForth running under Subleq, reverse engineers, people reusing DNS' connections for tunnels such as the folks from Iodine,…

HN discussionThere is a new blogpost from the author that explains the problems: http://changelog.complete.org/archives/9241-update-on-the-sy... TL;DR: systemd breaks badly (at the moment) when having to deal with non-standard setups (ZFS, cryptsetup)... HN discussionYou probably want to combine that with filespooler < https://www.complete.org/introduction-to-filespooler/ >, a tool to write packets to be handled sequentially. It will convert everything into files that can then be transported however you want, by mail, by syncthing, by nncp, ...

HN discussionI mean, I think understand what you mean, but that feels somewhat uncharitable. That is a kind of catch-all site and not the blog proper, which was linked in OP. HN discussionThat website is like Terry Davis brains rsynced backup. So many rabbitholes leading nowhere, just try this page - https://www.complete.org/encrypted/ What exactly it says ? Encryption is good, and lists other services which provide encryption. Ok so click on NNCP, on newly opened page, click encrypted. on newly opened page click NNCP. Continue. Yes thank you. Also i thought CURRENT usenet is just scam.
