  1. There is also no iPhone or Android app, but there is a pretty decent web interface. Not the case any longer, iPhone app is available (I haven't used it yet): https://www.jungledisk.com/iphone_app_backup_share_files_man... I'm sure an Android version is in the works.

  5. Didn't JungleDisk ( http://jungledisk.com ) kind of start this "backup to AWS, control your own data" movement? Does anyone use them anymore? I recall that they started as pay one price, then switched to a subscription model too... I wound up on Crashplan, though it's not perfect either.

Recurly for recurring billing ( http://recurly.com/ ) (they just added support for VAT, ideal for us in the UK, and they support SagePay UK as a payment gateway as well as PayPal) Unfuddle ( http://unfuddle.com/ ) and github ( http://github.com/ ) for bug tracking. 11. Cloud storage isn't the same as endpoint data protection. While it is creating a second copy of data and has versioning it really is an online filesystem with redundancy. Storage providers have not yet put together what I would consider an auditable data protection capability where you can restore a full folder, disk volume, or complete system to a point-in-time snapshot of the data with specific retention periods (…

  15. For a static site put it in version control and keep as copy of your full site and deployment code. For a database driven dynamic site or a site with content uploads you can also use your version control via cron job to upload that content. Have the database journal out the tables you need to backup before syncing to your DVCS host over choice. If you're looking for a backup service to manage multiple servers with r…

  21. Considering a 1TB external drive costs less than a hundred dollars, and back-up software is either free, bundled with the drive, or part of the OS, there really is no excuse other than ignorance. http://www.jungledisk.com/ is a super cheap cloud-based backup system based on S3 that has some nice client software, less n3rd than tarsnap.

  22. Speaking of off-site backups, I have recently discovered http://www.jungledisk.com/homeserver/index.aspx It backs up your stuff to S3, and it can work on your Mac/PC, or on Windows Home Server. Have't tied it yet, but looks pretty neat. Also, new NAS from HP has built-in S3 backup: http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/hp-mediasmart-server-ex48...

  24. Jungle Disk ( https://www.jungledisk.com/ ) is pretty much what the article describes: * Files are stored in a provider of your choice (current options are S3 and RackSpace) * Encrypted using a key stored locally * Looks like a local disk * Files are cached locally according to a set limit Unfortunately, the implementation is too sloppy. At least on OS X, the server is accessed using a local WebDAV server that proxi…

  26. I use JungleDisk ( https://www.jungledisk.com/ ) - it's good because it can be used for backups, syncing, and previous versions of synced folders. It also does multiple users and multiple operating systems (Mac/Windows - probably does Linux too but I haven't checked). It's also quite cheap. I previously used Mozy, which was excellent, but only does backup. Mozy was much more efficient over the wire, better at notifi…

  27. I won a Spideroak ( http://www.spideroak.com ) plan and have been using it for about a month now. It works, uploads are fast, I can't comment on how easy a restore would be. The only thing that's really annoying is that a search for updated files uses 100% CPU. Other than that I can warmly recommend JungleDisk ( https://www.jungledisk.com/ ), been using it do backup my source code and documents for about a year now…

  28. * Arc http://www.haystacksoftware.com/arq/ * JungleDisk https://www.jungledisk.com/ Arc supports encrypted backup to Amazon S3 and/or Glacier, works with occasionally connected external hard disks perfectly. I use this to backup RAW photos from Aperture stored on an external USB hard disk (at least 50GB worth).

  29. One option is to store your data on Amazon's S3 instance in Dublin. You can use https://www.jungledisk.com/ or other tools to do that. Edit: There is also a good overview of options (inc. location) here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_online_backup_ser...

  30. In the mean time one can use http://www.jungledisk.com/ it keeps stuff in S3, looks like a local disk drive, client-side encryption, standard amazon s3 rates + $20 for software itself. You can also give your key to their middle-tier server and have web access to your files.
