HN discussionNVIDIA has ML-based noise suppression functionality in the form of RTX Voice. There is also Krisp.ai, a similar product for noise canceling; they have written up an overview of the difficulties involved on the NVIDIA Developer Blog, interestingly enough (it seems they were called 2hz.ai back then): - https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/guides/nvidia-rtx-voice... - https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/nvidia-real-time-…

HN discussionThis is fascinating! Makes me wonder about whether machine learning audio filters like Krisp[1] could actually take high quality audio and enhance it further to make you sound _even smarter_? Like as if you had the infamous NPR mic setup... This phenomenon does kind of seem obvious in retrospect. I was at a Socialhour[2] event recently where they had a few presentations happening simultaneously and you could bounce…

HN discussionI believe Discord also uses Opus codec IIRC. But wonderful to see the codec in a fully open-source project. Added noise suppression would also be great, especially a FOSS-based one (Discord uses AI-based noise suppression from Krisp [0] -- a Berkeley, CA based for-profit startup). I'm curious if there are any FOSS community projects in this noise suppression space. Given the rapid rise in WFH culture post covid-19,…

HN discussionThe competitive gap with Discord in terms of media quality is probably something like: * Need a low-latency SFU. This should be very doable; not only are there a lot of good FOSS SFUs to build on top of these days, the history of the Matrix team is actually that we built VoIP stacks fulltime before we shifted focus to Matrix, and we've built MCUs and media servers of all flavours in the past. MSC3401 should also giv…

HN discussionI signed up for it too last weekend after coming across it after doing some research (I had been making a bunch of video recordings a few days prior, and once the videos were added into Camtasia and the audio played back I noticed a lot of background hum coming from my HVAC return outside of the room I'm in). Was impressed with the Krisp.ai tech as well and probably works similarly to this tool and the other Nvidia…

HN discussionAmbient noise cancellation is not the same thing. Most headphones do it passively by having a closed-back design. It blocks noise from reaching your ears, not the microphone. Active noise cancellation is not the same thing either. See https://krisp.ai/ for what you really need, and this is not something best done at the physical device level.

HN discussionIf you use GSuite Enterprise, you can use Meet's built-in noise cancellation which runs on TPUs in a DC. It's basically magic. You can have someone vacuuming the room right next to you or cook dinner and your coworkers won't notice. Typing noise is just gone. It has improved our meetings so much. https://krisp.ai works locally and is cheaper, but it noticeably degrades quality (tested with the Chrome extension only).

HN discussionJust wanted to mention there's some folks doing realtime source separation (not sure exactly how they've implemented it) with a DNN for reduction of background noise in, eg: Skype conversations. I'm not involved with them in any way, but I've been amazed with its ability to cancel out coffee-shop style noise. Check out https://krisp.ai/technology/ - Mac/Windows. I wish they had Linux support! Edit: Appears they don'…
