What Hacker News says?

  1. SSPL is NOT an open source license. OSI (Open Source Initiative) released a statement to clarify that, and also respondED to Elastic's claims. https://opensource.org/node/1099 The community has invested in Elasticsearch and in Kibana, and we need to keep it open source. really open source. 3. ODFE has a security plugin and supports auditing, RBAC and support for node to node encryption[1][2]. The security plugin is based on Search Guard[3].I have run Elastisearch clusters using both the Elastics Co opensource versions as well as ODFE and have personally found the security plugin of ODFE preferable to Elastic Co's X-pack. ODFE also has some additional features included like PerfAnalyzer and SQL interface.…

  5. Hi snewman, I am currently using logdna as my splunk alternative, but it's not very good. Why should I try scalyr next, over the other alternatives ? My main constraint is the solution should be at least half as good as splunk, and cost less than $50 a month (I generate less than 1G a day). Your pricing seems to be reasonable. But how do you compare to splunk on features ? Here are the other tools I am considering t…

  9. Years ago, ELK was the thing for log files. logstash. https://logz.io/blog/server-log-analysis/ loki is indeed what I ended up with and it was a mostly easier install process (despite the missing easily installed debian packages). The next problem being that Graphana is actually quite terrible at rendering log files. It seems the log file usecase just isn't that popular.

  19. I am not sure if any hate is warranted, but it is true that coming up with a new license which does not comply with open source licenses, and proceeding to call it open source definitely did not help to create sympathy. There is nothing wrong with releasing something under a proprietary license but calling this license change "Doubling down on open source" is damaging. https://logz.io/blog/open-source-elasticsearch-…

I guess it depends on your needs. Elasticsearch is a great option, and if you're looking for visualizing the data then it can be used together with Kibana to create cross-data graphs and visualizations. For the kind of data volume you're talking of, you'll need a fully scalable stack, with queuing and other buffers to handle traffic.
