Why HN links it

HN commenters point to Multigres, a project to bring Vitess-style sharding and high availability to Postgres, and link its blog posts on consensus algorithms, Paxos, and TLA+ testing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 10 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

A horizontally scalable Postgres architecture supporting multi-tenant, highly available, and globally distributed deployments.

  1. > Side node: The guy that wrote Vitess for Mysql, is also working on multigress ( https://multigres.com/ ), a solution that does the same. Aka Vitess for postgres. And also was the founder of planetscale

  3. Planetscale used to run postgres on AWS with network attached storage. So every time the DB hits the disks > it goes over the network. Need to read 4kb > network, another 4kb > network. So your latency is instead of microsecond on local storage, its miliseconds. Where a local NVME can do ... 100k 4k reads, over the network storage it does maybe 1k (just a example). The problem is, there are not a lot of solutions to…

  5. Your probably better off with the original flavor (the guy that made Vitesse) https://multigres.com/ He is making a open source version of porting Vitesse to Postgres.

  7. What about Multigres[0]? It builds on top of Postgres and adds HA (based on Flexible Paxos[1]), sharding, etc. They're still not production-ready, but I'm highly optimistic they will solve a lot of the problems Postgres have. For example, with Multigres, you should be able to achieve true zero downtime major version upgrade by simply resharding [2]. With vanilla Postgres + pgBouncer, you can only achieve near-zero d…

  9. this is the last of a 9-part series on database consensus algorithms (like Paxos and Raft): > Raft improved accessibility but remains a monolithic algorithm that's risky to modify. This has effectively limited our flexibility in adapting consensus systems to modern cloud architectures. The series begins here: https://multigres.com/blog/generalized-consensus

  11. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Multigres yet, they are the competitor of Neki. I'm a big fan of both and has been following them since they were announced last year. I think this blog post is the first time they are talking about the internals of Neki. In contrast, Multigres is being built in public since day 1, you can see their high-level architecture here [1], though I'm still waiting for more details on thei…
