HN discussionNice illustrations. It was a good idea to get the prologue/epilogue out of the way. Note that for optimized code, it's usually unnecessary. For more info: https://nickdesaulniers.github.io/blog/2014/04/18/lets-write...

HN discussionI'm so happy to see that I'm not alone. I've fought off depression through sheer willpower, but I frequently get anxiety attacks thinking about "Cosmic Sadness (I like your term for it)." I wrote about this a little while ago (don't mind the ramblings in the beginning) [1]. I think I could use some advice. [1] http://nickdesaulniers.github.io/blog/2013/04/29/the-persist...

HN discussionThese are called desginated initializers, they're part of C99.[0] This is a good read which discusses them and also devles into compound literals.[1] [0] https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Designated-Inits.html [1] https://nickdesaulniers.github.io/blog/2013/07/25/designated...

HN discussionWhat a weird coincidence seeing a comment about mergeable sections today... A patch I helped review that's related to this in LLVM just landed today: https://reviews.llvm.org/D72194 . (LLVM previously had support, but would perform bad merges in specific and rare edge cases; that patch fixes those cases). Also, note that you need a custom linker script to define those symbols (__start_some_array, __stop_some_array).…

HN discussion> I guess you could use the browser built in one but you likely lose features like dynamically switching video quality. But that's not true; the browser has built in support for Media Source Extensions! Did you mean the ability to choose the quality, perhaps? https://nickdesaulniers.github.io/netfix/#/

HN discussionCongrats Erich! One thing I'd be curious about is the ergonomics (or lack of) of explicit integer promotions and conversions for these types, as I find the current rules for implicit integer promotions a little confusing and hard to remember. For a fun compiler bug in LLVM due to representation of arbitrary width integers, see: https://nickdesaulniers.github.io/blog/2020/04/06/off-by-two...

HN discussionWhenever I give talks about WebGL and try to describe "real time rendering," I like to start off with with a description of what real time rendering is _not_. [0] The factoid I like to use is: "Toy Story 3 took on average 7 hours to render 1 frame (24 fps), and at most 39 hours." (source [1]) That means if we wanted to render the next frame dynamically based on user input, the user would have to wait on average 7 ho…
