  7. After reading their blog post about it [ https://nordvpn.com/blog/official-response-datacenter-breach... ], I'm not as concerned. A compromise is a compromise, don't get me wrong, but it can happen to absolutely anyone. If you're paying ~$5/month for anonymous browsing with unlimited bandwidth, then you're probably not getting top tier security researchers running your servers.

They clearly put a lot of effort in cleaning the mess, as I later discovered myself by being from the same city: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18611863 It seems very likely now, that ProtonMail just decided to use NordVPN's white-label solution to bootstrap its ProtonVPN business: https://nordvpn.com/white-label/

  15. There are many VPN services that begin just by reselling white-label VPN solutions, such as provided by NordVPN[1], because it's much cheaper and easier than building your own globally distributed high-capacity and low-latency network. I hope that Mozilla didn't go down this route, as many suspect ProtonVPN did[2], which Mozilla has partnered in the past with[3]. In fact, given that partnership I wouldn't be surpris…

"From the consumers’ point of view, net neutrality is a guarantee that all connections are treated equally and ISPs won’t censor the internet." https://nordvpn.com/blog/net-neutrality-pros-and-cons/ " Some notable incidents otherwise have included Bell Canada's throttling of certain protocols and Telus's censorship of a specific website…

  19. Can you clarify with examples/technical description how an open platform will be able to review & fix privacy/security issues like this more easily/faster? As far as I know this wouldn't be news on Android because such permissions are granted as a matter of course without review. Keep in mind that most people use the Google or Samsung stores which aren't open platforms for verifying permissions aren't misused. For w…

  21. I was actually just trying to make a (poor attempt at a) joke. Honestly, I don't really know, or care, how Signal works. I have no respect or interest in using any service which requires a cellphone to use it by fiat. I don't really have any great concern about the government requesting my information, not because I "don't have anything to hide" or "because I'm too boring to care about" but simply because I don't ca…

  23. Protect your privacy with a VPN, either run your own or use one of the available providers. It's a shame you need to do this, but that's just the state of things. Run your own with OpenVPN: https://openvpn.net VPN providers(not affiliated, just ones myself or colleagues use): https://www.expressvpn.com https://www.goldenfrog.com/vyprvpn https://nordvpn.com

  29. Telegram rolled their own crypto and is used for a lot of intelligence operations like monitoring dissident groups, promoting propaganda, recruiting agents, etc. That probably explains the push to discredit more private apps like Signal. Researchers of Telegram's protocol have said in some ways it's weaker than TLS. E.g. - https://www.wired.com/story/the-kremlin-has-entered-the-chat... - https://therecord.media/tele…
