What Hacker News says?

  1. It compiles down to JavaScript that you can then run on Node or the browser. I once wrote a big long rant about the mess that JS and Node have made trying to cope with async code and got tons of comments proposing X or Y library that would "fix" the issue. Not a single person mentioned StratifiedJS. I wonder if there was some history to it that prevented it from getting momentum.[0] [0] http://notes.ericjiang.com/po…

  5. https://notes.ericjiang.com/posts/751 "PayPal and Wal-Mart have also had high-profile switches to Node.js. Of course, they’re comparing two completely different things to make Node.js look better. In these too-good-to-be-true stories, they’re switching from a gigantic enterprisey codebase to a Node.js app written from scratch. Is there any question that it wouldn’t have been faster? They could have switched to prett…

  7. I tried to post this yesterday[0] and fell off the new stories list, but such is HN. Basically, they're nerfing their free tier by charging $7/month for a 24/7 running app. People wanting to run a free app may look at App Engine or AWS's one year free tier, or compare the price among other "cloud" and cloud-ish services. 9. Link doesn't work for me. From another source I found: Free – Experiment in your own dev or demo app with a web and a worker dyno for free. Sleeps after 1 hr of inactivity. Active up to 12 hours a day. No custom domains. 512 MB RAM. Hobby – Run a small app 24×7 with the Heroku developer experience for $7/dyno/mo. Custom domains. Run a maximum of one dyno per Procfile entry. 512 MB RAM. Standard 1X, 2X: Build product…

  11. >1. Electron. Simply awesome - I copied 90 % of my app, changed Sequelize ORM to have it's storage to sqlite and boom. I have a webapp as a OS-packaged app. And your users get to enjoy awful performance and insane resource usage for their app. How generous of you. Also, the hate for NodeJS is because Javascript is a terrible language, no matter how many things you put on it (TypeScript, Babel, etc.). It's also becau…

  15. Yep, I can also confirm that the UC-Logic devices are supported by the wizardpen driver on Linux. I wrote up some instructions a long time ago on getting it to work[1], and I'm sure there are more up-to-date instructions now. The USB protocol is almost trivial to figure out without documentation, and the wizardpen driver has been around for a long time. [1] http://notes.ericjiang.com/posts/45

  17. And Node evolved much later than the other stable frameworks. I was going to use NodeJS in 2014 for a startup, but after evaluating the absolute nightmare of ways you could do async programming in JavaScript, I went with Python and Tornado, which was a callback-free, clean way of programming. It was years ahead of JavaScript in that regard, so you were ahead of the curve if you were not jailed in the JS world. What…
