Why HN links it

HN readers cite OpenCage's posts on geocoding data, OpenStreetMap, and ChatGPT falsely claiming the company's services. Most comments link them as sources; one disputes the ChatGPT post's novelty.

What Hacker News says?

  1. My understanding is it forbids the hosting of the government collected (and curated, e.g. with regard to military bases) data outside the country, per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restrictions_on_geographic_dat... . See also, https://blog.opencagedata.com/post/openstreetmap-in-korea , which relates the situation the same way. It doesn't seem like anyone is hassled for editing openstreetmap from here (and it is quit…

  3. Do you need geocoding? I ask because I am one of the makers of the OpenCage geocoder. We offer forward and reverse geocoding from open data (primarily OpenStreetMap, but also others). We're listed in the migration guide, and we'll be offering 20% off our pricing for all former Mapzen customers. Blog post about that is coming shortly. I hope we can help you. https://geocoder.opencagedata.com Edit: here's the post abo…

We have started doing blog posts reviewing the various SaaS services we use: http://blog.opencagedata.com/tagged/toolsweuse so far we've covered * Baremetrics * Quaderno coming soon: * Statsbot * Hosted Graphite * StatusCake * TravisCI * Drip * TransferWise (not a SaaS service, but saves us a ton of money)

  9. An amazing effort, many congrats to all involved. I work on the address-formatting project, one small piece of the many used here. We currently have formatting rules for 93% of the world's 249 territories (as defined by ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes), but we need help to finish things out - especially from people with local knowledge and native speakers. Even for the countries we've "finished" more tests are always usefu…

  11. We do geocoding using open data sources https://geocoder.opencagedata.com/ and launched the product at the annual OpenStreetMap conference. Many people from the industry approached us, some blog posts, nothing really customer focused. We were sponsors of the conference and now corporate members of the OpenStreetMap foundation. We're listed in a couple of API-related directories but never made an effort to get as man…

  13. it already does tell people to go to sites, but it also lies about what's there. https://blog.opencagedata.com/post/dont-believe-chatgpt ChatGPT is a convincing fiction generator. Any facts it produces are purely coincidental. It's just really good at mansplaining and gaslighting people about things it knows nothing about.

  15. Its not like ChatGPT made this up. There were pre-existing YouTube tutorials and python scripts available that used OpenCage an purported to do this. OpenCage even blogged about this problem almost a year ago[1]. Honestly it looks more like OpenCage is trying to rehash the same issue for more clicks by spinning it off the hugely popular ChatGPT keywords. Wouldn't be too surprised if they created the original python…

  19. It keeps inventing features and command-line flags. A dozen times it presented me with code (Postgresql/PostGIS related) where it turns out a method cannot be called with those parameters. https://blog.opencagedata.com/post/dont-believe-chatgpt "TL;DR ChatGPT claims we offer an API to turn a mobile phone number into the location of the phone.
