What Hacker News says?
The upside of this change is it should help raise awareness and investment in mapping products that are open source and use open data. Off the top of my head, there are a number of companies/services that can serve as alternatives to Google Maps, and one way or another they all contribute to the collective quality of open source and open data map tools: * geocode.earth ( https://geocode.earth ) has geocoding includi…

HN discussionI meant there are many ready-to-use map UIs out there already, like the UI from OTP or valhalla itself. No need to reinvent the wheel. E.g. see https://valhalla.openstreetmap.de/ Or https://github.com/Qwant/erdapfel Or https://graphhopper.com/maps2 & https://github.com/graphhopper/graphhopper-maps (disclaimer: I'm a contributor there)

HN discussionWhat problems did you face with cycling directions? Regarding the route shapes I can only guess: we use an encoded polyline as default for a very compact response. You can either disable this or use our JavaScript library, or there is a new UI https://github.com/graphhopper/graphhopper-maps Regarding routing parameters: our custom_model approach is more powerful than simple parameters and still not complicated: http…

HN discussionGraphHopper | Cloud Engineer | Munich, Germany | REMOTE possible, contract based GraphHopper is the driver behind the popular open source projects GraphHopper Routing Engine and GraphHopper jsprit using open data like OpenStreetMap. On top of these projects we built the GraphHopper Directions API and now look to improve our architecture (bare metal & cloud mix with docker, kubernetes etc) with your help. For more in…

HN discussionWhen using GraphHopper this is not the case. For hiking elevation is considered but hills are not explicitly avoided only slower for up and downhill. For bike we avoid uphill. https://graphhopper.com/maps/ (click the dots near the bike icon for more profiles) And the best is: everything is open source and you can easily tweak it according to your needs.

HN discussionWe often hear that the pricing model is not the only problem. E.g. there are other restrictions like being forced to display the result on a (google) map etc Also not that you cannot really cache routes, nor could you store all (not even Google) or even just distances or ETAs. But that is also not necessary to get fast and relative 'CPU light' responses. > I get incomparable functionality using OSM. Have a look at h…

HN discussionThere's also: Project OSRM: https://www.project-osrm.org/ and GraphHopper https://graphhopper.com/ And for the UI, you can use https://github.com/perliedman/leaflet-routing-machine all of which you can self-host using OpenstreetMap data.

HN discussionI'll do a shameless advertisement of our open source routing engine GraphHopper as one of our main advantage over the big companies is that we do not track users. We rent our servers (not on AWS or GC :) ) and remove logs after max. 5 weeks https://graphhopper.com/maps/ (see our privacy policy for more details) We only keep them for debugging purposes and attack prevention. The maps layer (visualization) is done fro…

HN discussionThere's (justifiably) a lot of love for Mapbox in this thread as an alternative, but as remarked, their pricing isn't particularly cheap (why should it be, they sell on the quality of the product). So the other option is to self-host tools using OpenStreetMap data. Some pointers: * Raster tiled maps: the canonical instructions are at switch2osm.org; put it on commodity hardware such as Hetzner/OVH. * Vector maps: a…
