  1. See my comments on Auth here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23320443 > We want to nail the auth and we're looking at leveraging Postgres' native Row Level Security. This is a tricky task to "generalize" for all businesses but we have some good ideas (we're discussing in our repo if you want to follow - https://github.com/supabase/supabase ) > RESTful APIs I can of course get with PostgREST That's what we use!…

  3. Nice to see these sort of posts popping up on HN. I've been enjoying HN the past few weeks - a lot of community related posts and engagement. Honestly I don't have much worth reading on my blog. But I see a lot of posts about the "best way to store knowledge" - org-mode, roam, zettelkasten, markdown etc. My blog isn't worth reading because that's exactly what I use it for. If you're looking for a way to [1] take not…

  5. I'm not sure about postgrest, but with postgraphile you can control field exposure and add getters/setters fairly granularly. Regardless, that's no reason to say it's "not a good idea at all." having a schema change ripple through the stack is just a trade-off, which is often even desirable. If engineers are shipping code to production with postgrest, and attributing it in part to their success, maybe reconsider the…

Side topic: Any idea how sequence diagram in page [0] is created? It is not an image but text over-layed with some background images and I think it looks and feels awesome. [0] https://paul.copplest.one/gists/secrets-management-sops.html...

  9. Not OP, but we do something similar it our startup. PostgREST ( http://postgrest.org ) definitely helps if you want to go down this path as it exposes everything in the database (including functions etc) via a RestFUL api. A bit outdated now, but some details here: https://paul.copplest.one/blog/nimbus-tech-2019-04.html#tech...

  13. In my previous startup I used my Postgres database to generate out JSON Schemas (detailed in [1]). It was great for validations. We even generated some of the UI from the Schemas. > Just to add to this, things like authorization, login, registration, etc, seem tiresome to write every time for a new API Check out Supabase [2], which is similar to Parse (disclosure: I'm a Supabase cofounder). We use Postgres as a back…

  15. I once had a relationship with someone with depression. As someone who is naturally quite happy[1], the thing that suprised me most at the start of the relationship is the amount of time she spent strategising how to be happy, rather than just getting on with being happy. In her case, it's understandable because depression is completely irrational[2] But nations do have the capacity to act rationally, so when I thes…

  17. My blog is also like this - https://paul.copplest.one Basically it’s a wiki of things that I stumble upon and want to learn later (mostly from HN). It’s not so interesting for general reading, but the cheat sheets and code snippets get a lot of use from my friends in tech (and from google it seems). I figure at the end of my life it will be a fairly complete knowledge base of everything I’ve ever learned

  19. In the AR circles, what they are building is called the AR Cloud - basically a digital representation of the physical world. A “complete state” of this digital world has a number of practical benefits for autonomous vehicles/drones, but you’re right that in the path to get there is mostly going to be filled with gaming and advertising, and the occasional niceties. I wrote about some applications here: https://paul.c…

  21. I really love PostgREST. This was my early approach to realtime, using PostgREST for CRUD operations: https://paul.copplest.one/blog/nimbus-tech-2019-04.html#tech... Not much is different now except I don't use NOTIFY anymore due to the 8000 byte payload limitation (and the reason why I made the elixir server)

  25. My colleague has been asking me to teach him to code for years now. I decided I would start by teaching him the same way I started - by hand coding HTML. As a result, his website feels like a throwback to the early internet. I’m sharing this in case anyone else has an interest in teaching a friend.
