HN discussionI don't know if he's right, but Peter Zeihan thinks the breakdown in globalization will negatively affect the ability to continue to improve the chips that AI depends on[0]. Too many steps in the supply chain, too widespread, too vulnerable to deglobalization. 0: https://zeihan.com/the-ai-race-to-regression/

HN discussionThe product of tech companies is the tech itself. For oil, the tech is a means and can be imported. Drilling oil is technically complicated but you can hire foreign companies to do the hard work, just like most African nations. Russia relies heavily on foreign companies to drill oil. https://zeihan.com/the-end-of-russian-oil/

HN discussionSomeone posted this link the other day. https://zeihan.com/my-way-or-the-huawei/ . If enough people have a cold war mentality strategically it makes some sense. Combined with the chance to annoy the Chinese govt in the middle of a trade war, Trump will love it.

HN discussionTo expand upon my parents take, according to Peter Zeihan's opinion piece which shows an interesting glimpse into Alberta and its conflicts with other anti-oil vested interests https://zeihan.com/albertas-tryst-with-destiny/ : Alberta oil has constantly been blocked, stalled, and given added friction from leaving Alberta by neighboring territories. HN discussion> Securing the borders from what? Russia has been invaded by land countless times over the centuries as it has few natural barriers. Securing good natural borders has been a major national security concern for Russia for centuries and up until the fall of Soviet Union they had secured all of them. They have been winning those back gradually over the last couple of decades. > If he was worried about NATO he would be…

HN discussionExactly. I don't think most solar & wind maximalists realize how little of the world is both optimal for solar panels AND located near a urban centre. Having solar in the middle of the Sahara is utterly worthless because transmission makes it comically inefficient (beyond how inefficient solar is to begin with), and then you take another inefficiency tax storing it in batteries. Having solar panels on a random home…
