HN discussion> I'm thinking to give it a try in one of my React Native apps that face very uncertain connectivity. Some similar stuff you may want to investigate (no real opinion, just sharing since I've investigated this space a bit): - https://rxdb.info - https://www.powersync.com - https://electric-sql.com - https://dexie.org https://localfirstweb.dev is a good link too.

HN discussionNot sure if you've looked at PowerSync yet: https://www.powersync.com/ (I'm on the team) For the read path it hooks into Postgres logical replication or MongoDB change streams (and MySQL binlog soon). It supports partial syncing using declarative rules. For the write path, it allows writing to the local SQLite database and also places writes into an upload queue, and then uses a developer-defined function to upload…

HN discussionYes, using IndexedDB is common, and increasingly also running SQLite in the browser using Wasm, with its data persisted through a VFS that uses IndexedDB or OPFS. https://www.powersync.com/blog/sqlite-persistence-on-the-web

HN discussionPowerSync has an article on using Postgres with Yjs (and perhaps look into Yrs, the Rust implementation, as well as other Rust crates like Loro and Automerge that are much faster) and they use a table in the database that stores the changes, is that what you are doing too [0]? HN discussionI think that is where sync engines come in that allow doing arbitrary hybrid queries (across local and remote data) and then keeping the results of those hybrid queries in sync on the client. This is one of the ideas that appears to be central to the genesis of Zero [1] ElectricSQL allows for a similar pattern and PowerSync is also working on this [2] [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqOUgqsWvbw [2] https://www.p…

HN discussion> All this recent hype about sync engines and local first applications completely disregards conflict resolution. Not really true though. I've used a couple of local sync engines, one internally built and another one which is both commercial and now open source called PowerSync[1]. Conflict resolution is definitely on the agenda, and a developer is definitely going to be mindful of conflicts when designing the appli…

HN discussionhttps://electric-sql.com/ does this, running a stripped-down version of postgres on the client. https://www.powersync.com/ is a similar approach, but using sqlite on the client. https://zero.rocicorp.dev/ also deserves a mention, but I believe it’s more of a read cache with writes going directly to the server. I’m not sure if it supports SQL client-side or has its own ORM.
