HN discussionWe spent a lot of time building tagging systems to organize technology skills on https://www.moonlightwork.com . The coolest part was training a collaborative filter on the tags. So, when you add "Django" as a skill, it could recommend "Python" as a related skill. This made for some refined user experiences. Getting typeahead search right took a lot of refinement. Here is some of the logic we ended up implementing o…

HN discussionWe prototyped https://www.moonlightwork.com without code. Here was our basic workflow: 1. Marketing site set up using Squarespace 2. Developers apply using Typeform. We add them to a Google Sheet with Zapier. 3. New jobs submitted through Typeform, which triggers an email to us 4. We manually set up a new Google Form to collect proposals. We send the results google sheet to the client. 5. We manually search for deve…

HN discussionWe are looking at alternatives like Payoneer. I have a personal moral opposition to PayPal :-) We very seriously investigated cryptocurrencies. We found that companies would have to pay with crypto to make it legal under us law, and companies were not ready to do that yet. HN discussionThe average age of developers is increasing. A generation is leaving SF to start families in other cities. Fewer people want to come to SF due to costs and low quality of living, and startups are no longer expected to be in the Bay. Coding schools are graduating new developers all over the country (and the world). The future is remote. I have a contrarian viewpoint: I think employment doesn't work with remote work a…

HN discussionYou're right. During startup school [1], they pushed us to do things manually - which helped us to iterate quickly and learn the process. However, we've hit the limits of what we can do manually right now, so we are in the process of building out an app. (We've even been hiring moonlighters to help us out). We plan to launch the app in the next month, and with that - we should be able to scale the number of projects…

HN discussionHi, You're correct - we have more contractors than developers right now. Sorry if you haven't been matched yet - if you send me an email (philip at moonlightwork.com) we can feature you on next week's Orbit [1] email to clients. The process has largely been manual with spreadsheets until now, but soon you will be able to log in and browse all open projects. Over half of our projects have been completed by a contract…

HN discussionWe had a great experience. Thanks to all of the mentors, who spent hours per week helping all of the participants in office hours. HN discussionI'm a digital nomad who as in the same position. I couldn't find contract work for high-skill engineers. So, I started building a marketplace for it. Today that's Moonlight - we are still small, bootstrapped, and growing, but we have companies ranging from startups to a publicly-traded company hiring through the site. Hourly rates average a little over $100US. https://www.moonlightwork.com
