  1. Not really. It reminds me a lot of iMacros, even the UI https://www.progress.com/imacros

  3. There are many. A sample in alphabetical order - and by no means exhaustive: https://apify.com/ (YC F1) https://automatio.co/ https://axiom.ai/ (YC W21) https://extension.dev/ https://www.progress.com/imacros https://trysmartcuts.com (YC W21) https://ui.vision/ https://wildfire.ai/ 3 of these are YC companies. Reminds me of mixpanel vs segment vs amplitude, where YC are backing all the horses. Each company is differ…

  5. When Progress Inc. changed the name of their awful-yet-surprisingly-popular closed-source (even [ anti -open-source]( https://www.progress.com/tutorials/odbc/open-source-database ) ) 4GL from ProgressDB to "OpenEdge" it was a reminder to me that there is absolutely nothing to a name. "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" - similarly: "Open[BLANK] by any other name would be just as much marketing bollocks".

  7. Progress also up until recently stewarded the excellent Nativescript[0][1] project -- though it doesn't always get the most press, I maintain that it is the best non-native development mobile development kit. Since it seems to be really hard to find this information, want to make a copy of the content of the second link ([1]): > A New Corporate Sponsor for NativeScript > Progress is proud to introduce nStudio as the…

  9. No, they are not. They might claim though - as in the link below - that this is because their products are too niche to support quality input from open source. Make of that what you will. https://www.progress.com/tutorials/odbc/open-source-database

  10. Likewise with the OO guys. Eggs.mix() .whip() .beat(); There's even a term for it - 'fluent API' - described as: > Fluent API is a way of implementing object oriented API in a way that it provides readable code. [ https://www.progress.com/documentation/sitefinity-cms/for-de... ]

  11. LINQ is just an "express your query as an AST" approach. Sure LINQ presents its self as a DSL on top of that AST ( which is exactly what SQL is at the end of the day ), but there are libraries for MongoDB that allow you to do the same thing. There is even a LINQ driver for MongoDB[1]. What you are missing is that by having the lowest common denominator be the AST instead of a DSL you have removed a huge burden from…

  12. Progress ( https://www.progress.com/ ) is behind NativeScript, and officially supports the two usual NativeScript stacks (plain JavaScript/Typescript & Angular). NativeScript + Vue is a community driven project that seems to be on its way to also being officially supported by Progress.

  13. Well, there is a balance. In many circumstances, the same service used by different applications may over-fetch or under-fetch data [0]. OData allows the application to describe exactly what they need including things like filtering, ordering and aggregation that might be less efficient to perform on the application side [1]. Having performed the OData.org Basic Tutorial [2] using just curl, I was positively impress…

  14. Historically regulators (such as the SEC and FSA in the UK) have had to look at the data after the fact to search for evidence of insider trading. They are in the midst of adopting technologies that will allow them to monitor in real time, and potentially even stop the trades (though I'm not sure it would have help in this case). Apama is helping do this in the UK: http://apama.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/06/the_fina…

  15. Bingo! I came across Progress first time this week in a different context (Indian startup scene) - they portray themselves as incubators here ( https://www.progress.com/incubator ). Have a fancy application system et al.. even stress how they don't take any equity. Turns out in lieu of essentially a deskspace and maybe wifi they mandate the incubated startups to use their Cloud platform products - aha lockin! This i…

  16. (When you say "IT work" - are you referring to software-engineering work specifically - or "IT" in general? (I'm personally not a fan of "IT" as a term at all because it's unhelpfully vague[1]). I wasn't comparing them directly like that. My point is that in the 1990s if you used VB in production systems then you would effectively be forced into investing a lot of company resources - and mental effort - into all kin…
