What Hacker News says?

  1. In short, it’s painful :) Looking into a Stripe plugin like https://www.quaderno.io/ I really enjoy using Stripe, and their support is great, but sales tax compliance makes me a bit jealous of those using Paddle.

Have a look at https://quaderno.io/ for handling the EU VAT stuff. I actually don't use it, but I remember that they provided a checkout experience similar to Stripe.

  7. Yes. I've been researching this in recent weeks, and have found several operators that build on top of Stripe and PayPal, in various ways, to handle the VATMOSS burden. Without offering any recommendation for them, here are two I've investigated: * https://www.taxamo.com/ * https://quaderno.io/

EU SaaS founder here. It really is not as complicated as people are making it out to be, at least for digital services (I have no experience with physical products). Use a service like Quaderno https://quaderno.io for the invoicing, they plug into Stripe. Once you get that set up it's not a big issue.

We (SaaS, https://geocoder.opencagedata.com/ ) use https://quaderno.io/ plus their Stripe connector which handles inter-european VAT well. It takes care of invoice PDF generation, UI for users to change their billing details, list of past invoices etc.

I recommend https://quaderno.io/ used them with four different kinds of business running through Stripe including a SaaS doing > $1 million ARR. Works great and their customer support is excellent.

  17. One word of caution: at least if you're based in the EU, this is basically impossible to do legally correctly by yourself globally unless you spend many thousands of dollars VAT-registering yourself in all kinds of places around the world and knowing global tax laws to make sure you get everything right, since electronically delivered goods (like your SaaS) are taxed in the country of the recipient of the services.…

  19. I found the VAT place of supply rules to be inconvenient but reasonably straightforward to comply with. Several billing platforms will collect VAT across the EU on your behalf, or there are third-party solutions that will integrate with your own payment gateway. I have no idea what the situation is in Poland, but there's no such thing as a "felony" in my country; an honest mistake on my tax return is an honest mista…

  23. That is a good question that you should discuss with your tax accountant :) I don’t know about the specifics of how payment works on patreon, but there are services that help with the tax issue. Quaderno https://www.quaderno.io/ is one that we have used for selling (remote) trainings. It ties into stripe, so that’s fairly simple to set up. Keep in mind that if you have to do the VAT dance, you’ll most likely need to…

  27. Much of this (as admitted in the tweet thread) is due to the VAT changes, I don't think it is wise to blame this on Brexit and move on as it ignores the growing problem. The only connection Brexit has to this is timing, these VAT changes are EU wide and will rolled out to EU member states this year. Foreign companies will need to charge VAT at the member states rate (some have multiple) and register for VAT in the E…

  28. Hi there! I'm Carlos, founder of Quaderno ( https://quaderno.io ). Thanks for the referral, Keats. I built Quaderno two years ago because I was tired to deal with payments, invoicing, accounting, and tax rules (specially now when there are more and more digital taxes worldwide) in my past projects. My goal was to automate the whole accounting process for any SaaS. Of course you can use your own billing system, but a…
