Too few sampled comments (10) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

Jordan Ellenberg's math blog. HN commenters link to it as a source on Mochizuki's abc-conjecture proof, Knuth's big-O notation, child prodigies, and reading lists. None of the comments judge the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 10 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

Math, Madison, food, the Orioles, books, my kids.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Your interpretation is right, and those minima are interesting in themselves. For example, when http://quomodocumque.wordpress.com/2012/09/03/mochizuki-on-a... was posted, the very first comment was about that. "It almost looks as if the method doesn't (as presently written) produce explicit constants. Hopefully as the ideas become more widely understood, effective constants will be able to be extracted."

  7. Related to your comment, not the original post/book: - On Knuth’s idea (which seems good to me), see http://quomodocumque.wordpress.com/2012/05/29/knuth-big-o-ca... but also the last two comments by David Speyer. - And see also http://cornellmath.wordpress.com/2007/08/28/non-nonstandard-... and http://texnicalstuff.blogspot.in/2011/05/big-o-notation-for-... that seem to have tried teaching along somewhat similar (bu…

  9. The more mathematically-inclined HNers might be interested in Brian Conrad and Terrence Tao's comments at the bottom of this previous HN article: http://quomodocumque.wordpress.com/2012/09/03/mochizuki-on-a... Edit: Minhyong Kim's initial thoughts seem very interesting as well! http://mathoverflow.net/questions/106560/what-is-the-underly... 13. You're not stupid. At least, there is very little chance that the math you're trying to work on right now requires super-normal cognitive abilities of any sort: it's more about learning to be comfortable with the ambiguity or lack of comprehension that the process of learning entails. Here's a grab-bag of stuff that have helped me (and still do) lift myself out of "damn I'm dumb" situations such as the one you seem…
