Why HN links it

Replicache's homepage for its sync library for offline-first web apps. HN commenters mostly list it alongside other local-first tools or cite it as a product, rather than discussing its writing.

  3. I'm grossly over simplifying but I've always thought a cut down version of Replicache[1] functionality would be an amazing logical progression for LiveView. With Phoenix.Component[2] introducing attributes it's perhaps closer to being feasible. [1] https://replicache.dev [2] https://hexdocs.pm/phoenix_live_view/Phoenix.LiveComponent.h...

  9. To answer your specific questions: > What if the data I need isn’t in the cache? The developer can arrange for all the data to be in the cache if the want that part of the app to be fully offline capable. > What happens when I edit things offline then come online later? Zero won't support offline mutation at launch, but there's nothing preventing it from working. It is built on [Replicache]( https://replicache.dev )…

  11. Hi Joseph, There is a lot of debate about this in the community. People like pvh, adam wiggins, and johannes have all said they consider Replicache and Zero part of the local-first movement [1] and that they would be sad if we and other things like us weren't in it. I was even invited to speak at local-first conf, where we announced Zero last May. [2] I think in practice delivering on the local-first ideals is ultim…

  13. Since you mentioned Dolt, I will add Noms [1], which is the original db that Dolt is based on. The folks that created Noms are working now on Replicache [2]. I started using Noms in my project and the offline first tech is really wonderful; it allows me to do some cool stuff like syncing clients only when they come online. 1. https://github.com/attic-labs/noms 2. https://replicache.dev

  14. There is a lot of movement in the offline-first/multiplayer space at the moment, after apps like Linear [1] & Figma [2] have pushed the paradigms. 15. I want to build local first software backed by EdgeDB. Similar to these tools: - https://replicache.dev - https://github.com/tantaman/conflict-free-sqlite - https://aphrodite.sh I wonder if EdgeDB provides any utilities to make this already perhaps? Or community has to build some kind of CRDT software that builds on top of EdgeDB that will do local syncing? Maybe that's planned to be tackled for 3.0?

  20. Replicache ( https://replicache.dev/ ) and clientdb ( https://clientdb.dev/ ) are the only productized versions of this architecture I'm aware of (please do let me know if anyone is aware of others!). But the architecture itself has been used successfully in a bunch of apps, most notable of which is probably Linear ( https://linear.app/docs/offline-mode , I remember watching an early video of their founder explainin…

  21. Yes! I have long felt like there are CRDTs possible that maintain complex application invariants (that is, have transactions). But when I sat down to think about it I realized that CRDTs make the problem far harder than it needs to be for today's software. CRDTs are designed for when there is no central authority, where all nodes are peers. But most software is not peer-to-peer, it's client/server and does in fact h…

  22. I think that's the future of making web apps working fast. Trying to build some things now with Replicache ( https://replicache.dev ) and Logux ( https://logux.io ). Replicache is a paid service though so trying to make it work with Logux ideally together with a SolidJS app I am building.

  23. The recent evolution of JS frameworks has been really nice. Performance is basically getting identical to desktop. The three recent developments I've noticed: - "Islands" in Deno https://fresh.deno.dev/ and https://remix.run/ where only small isolated parts get hydrated, instead of the whole page - Using http://linear.app style data-flows ala Replicache ( https://replicache.dev/ ) where JSON data is preloaded for al…

  25. Everybody is focused on literally replicating the data model and using SQL which obviously won't work. But the idea is directionally correct. Replicate the subset of data the user has access to and wants locally and work on it disconnected, then sync changes asynchronously to server. This is difficult, but necessary for fully responsive and collaborative applications. Check out https://replicache.dev for a productiz…

  26. This looks really cool, love seeing more innovation in this space! At first glance this seems to be mostly targeted towards single-user apps where each user would have their own database that can be sync'ed to a remote server, but still isolated from data for other users, similar to the CouchDB+PouchDB model? At least it looks that way since I couldn't see anything around authorization and conflict resolution. Not t…

  30. Linear.app has shown that a web-powered desktop app can be as fast as a native desktop app. There's still tons of room to make web powered desktop apps better than the current mainstream Electron ones - without abandoning the browser. There's a commercial project that's trying to make linear's architecture into a framework: https://replicache.dev/ Demo: https://repliear.herokuapp.com/d/lXsPEs2kl6?view=active
