What Hacker News says?

  1. Startup success is Anna Karenina Principle[1] flipped. I wrote about it some time back[2]. Every startup dies either because it failed to build something that people would want to pay for, or failed to create a profitable business around it (or, maybe the founders just got burned out). Successful businesses, on the other hand, find their own path to make it to the top. That doesn't mean you can't learn from articles…

  3. I have been using Notion in its API form for a while through notion-py[1]. Currently, it powers my blog[2] and for me, it's a really good integration. I write something, ask my friends to review it. I run a command to publish it, and it's live. The workflow is really, really good and removes a ton of friction because the software that you write in is also the one that powers your blog's content. Overall, I think Not…

  5. Awesome job! This makes me a bit envious. I am hobbyist colorizer [1] who did it the old school way (with tools like Affinity Photo and lot of manual work). I tried de-oldify and other tools but I justified my work thinking how horrible they were but pallette.fm is way too good. Not sure if I would find the motivation to restore old photos anymore. Glad that this was just a small hobby for me and I had just started…

  7. > But don't force it down my throat or act like it's the One True Path to clean code. When I was a programming beginner and started learning about TDD, I was always thinking how soon to start using it because everyone says it's such a good idea. If you would search anything about it, you'd rarely find a resource not marvelling at its surprising benefits (at least, that is how it was few years back). Granted, it may…

  9. I would contend that it's our failure of imagination to think that philanthropy is the only way to help humankind. I wrote about this a while back. [1] While charity sounds great in theory, donating a billion dollars more isn't going to help poor kids in Africa a whole lot, simply because they aren't suffering due to lack of money. It's rather due to corruption, instability of government, and lack of proper law enfo…

  11. Frankly, picking a non-conventional language in order to associate yourself with "true hackers" is PG's least useful advice. I am not even sure if he would still agree today. Hackers use the language they are most comfortable with and that gets things done. Everything else is secondary. I wrote a blog post on the subject [1]. 13. I wrote about a blog post about this: https://shubhamjain.co/2020/05/17/being-fast-matters . Basically, as your get better, you also get faster. It's an unpopular opinion but great programmers can often perform wonderful in a short amount of time. Hell, it took Linus just a day to start using Git for managing Git[1]. It's a product of experience, thinking clearly, and being knowledgable about good tools for the job.…

  15. I find articles like this daunting, even when it predates CSS Grid which has made CSS Layouting even more complex. I have been a web developer for 10 years, and I still feel out of depth about CSS. How it all works, obscure edge cases, internals, and the sheer number of features in there. I wrote about it recently [1] > I hadn’t even completely caught up with the intricacies of Grid Layouting, when subgrid and conta…

  17. I had the same thoughts on conversational interfaces [1]. Humane AI failed not only because of terrible execution, the whole assumption of voice being a superior interface (and trying to invent something beyond smartphones) was flawed. > Theoretically, saying, “order an Uber to airport” seems like the easiest way to accomplish the task. But is it? What kind of Uber? UberXL, UberGo? There’s a 1.5x surge pricing. Acce…

  19. This is a brilliant article. It concerns with Magazine publishing but I can guess that the principles apply everywhere. I read the author's pitches with a mind of an editor constantly thinking how would I ever possibly pass it? The surprising thing about pitching / selling is how oversold is the "magical" knack — of the business guy who knows how to woo. But it's only a matter of understanding that people are willin…

  21. I talked about this in my blog post [1]. I didn't expect regulators to pay attention to the issue anytime soon—let alone move against it. So kudos to the Australian government. Enough with the free-speech and free-market rhetoric: algorithmic feeds are actively poisoning our minds and should be regulated as strictly as possible. > The issue is that much of the problematic content doesn’t violate any law but still is…

  25. The benefit of any productivity hack / book / app is ephemeral before you are back to your "mindless" browsing (I wrote about it sometime back [1]). It's a great business isn't it? Write a book / app about procrastination — something that everyone is looking to "fix" and start raking money. You can write daily / weekly / monthly goals for all you want but a "guilt-creating" laundry list of tasks doesn't really help.…

  29. I wrote about this a while back [1]. Thinking that more charitable donations will create more upliftment is a false premise. Don't get me wrong, charities do serve a function. But most of the human suffering emanates from greedy politics, corruption, and dumb policies. Most of the world problems can't be solved with capital alone. Poor African countries, for instance, have received trillion dollars in aid, and yet b…
