Called the most promising option, 'where it's at', and one that takes security and decentralization pretty far while staying convenient.1234

  5. I found SimpleX recently ( https://simplex.chat/ ), which got my attention because it uses a unique account schema that doesn't have any individual account identifiers. It's got some interesting features. Not sure about user-friendliness since I don't use other messaging apps to know what to expect. It's mostly just interesting to me that they did away with the username entirely and they instead have users connect e…

I find that Privacyguides always has recommendations worth following: https://www.privacyguides.org/en/real-time-communication/ Of these, https://simplex.chat/ seems the most promising, thanks to a level of decentralization.

  9. Business, eh. Maybe it's time to go open source and fully distributed peer-to-peer. Something like Tox[0] or SimpleX[1]. The (actual) solution should be to fix legislation to adequate protect privacy, because they'll attack this next. But meantime, a technical solution is better than nothing. 0. https://tox.chat/ 1. https://simplex.chat/

  11. Can anyone comment on where this puts Signal now in relation to iMessage with PQ3[1]? As an aside, can anyone comment on earlier (fast/rushed/sound?) attempts at quantum-resistant encrypted messaging in Cyph[2] and Simplex[3] in comparison? 13. That you don't like the design is well known. But this is not the reason to lie. You understand the design quite well, from our past conversations, you simply don't like the fact that we don't recognise user IP address as a permanent user identifier on the protocol level. It is indeed a transport identifier, not a protocol-level identifier that all other messaging networks have for the users (in addition to transpor…

  15. >One of the biggest privacy problems in messaging is the availability of loads of meta-data — essentially data about who uses the service, who they talk to, and when they do that talking. >I am not specifically calling out Telegram for this, since the same problem exists with virtually every other social media network and private messenger. In fact, https://simplex.chat/ is the only messenger with the least amount o…

  19. https://simplex.chat/ is iterating on this. There’s a lot of pros and cons to any design of private group chats from the perspective of privacy, performance and single points of failure.

  21. > SimpleX does not. https://simplex.chat/faq/ > Private message routing is, effectively, a two-hop onion packet routing. And actually, it's even better than that: > Private message routing routes packets (each message is one 16kb packet), not sockets. Unlike Tor and VPN, it does not create circuits between your client and destination servers. The forwarding server creates one shared session between itself and the de…

  23. > And, I don't think this is what Moxie wanted. Moxie as far as I know is still involved in the project and is the source of decisions such as requiring a phone number. My understanding is he is leaning hard on "encryption for anyone and everyone" over all other considerations such as decentralization. A common criticism is "huh, not very anarchist of him!" Which, maybe? If decisions like that can get Signal into as…

  27. Could you clarify with regarding to .onion? How would I set this up for SimpleX and how would I configure SimpleX to use it, on, say, Android and Linux? I believe to use Tor with SimpleX, you would have to use Orbot, for example. What would I have to set up and how, on Linux? Genuine question. I would much prefer to self-host it.
