What Hacker News says?
https://www.ivpn.net/ also generates a random userid and also accepts cash in the mail (only for large purchases unfortunately). I wasn't able to get mullvad's multihop to work on Android, but iVPN Pro does the trick. iVPN also has a nice server status page that helps you optimize for speed (low load server) or anonymity (high load server) as appropriate: https://www.ivpn.net/status/ They have a weird "anti-marketin…

HN discussionWhois has provider name, business address and telephone.[0] They say:[1] > VPN was founded in 2009 by a group of information security professionals who met whilst doing their Msc in Information Security at Royal Holloway, University Of London. I've never researched that, but I've worked with them for years, and it's consistent with my experience. They're good people, I believe. [0] http://www.siteshowinfo.org/sites/…

HN discussionIt's arguably no more a "hack" than TLS is one. Right? Re OpenVPN vs IKEv2/IPSec, this IVPN FAQ seems accurate.[0] But then, I helped edit it, so I'm biased. Still, if anyone can point to inaccuracies, I'll recommend fixing them :) The major weakness is pre-shared IKE keys. On the other hand, I get from IVPN that the IPSEC implementation in iOS is very secure. 0) https://www.ivpn.net/knowledgebase/160/Is-using-L2TPo…

HN discussionWell, of course I would! They're one of the oldest. Except for the the first generation, anyway, such as Anonymizer (now basically owned by the CIA) and Cryptohippie (still very cool, but very expensive). And they have great clients for Windows, OS X and iOS. I've found a few others that are just as leak-free.[0] However, the data there are old, and just about all VPN services have improved their clients. What's mos…

HN discussionThat system a) has a paytrail, b) involves companies that can be coerced / hacked with relative ease, c) is a paid system and d) is quite a bit for average user to handle. Also, if you're going to stay anonymous, you need something that is extremely hard to misconfigure. I use wireguard on my Android and I've set the VPN to activate automatically, and I only allow connection via VPN, but I'd never imagine any of the…

HN discussionThis would be a privacy option for Firefox, not the default. But yes, Tor introduces latency and reduces bandwidth. For traffic to the open Internet, traffic uses circuits through three relays: entry guard, middle and exit. So there are four hops between users and websites, instead of one. The Earth's circumference is about 40 thousand km. So the longest path is arguably ~20 thousand km. And rtt for that would be ab…

HN discussionhttps://www.ivpn.net/ see "Do you really need a VPN?" - not affiliated with them, but tell me any other VPN-service that is actually this upfront... most are marketing the hell out of their apparent magic effects... since we're on the topic: how is it still a thing that vpn services are actively pitching content-block/copyright circumvention? Seems weird to pitch something as shady this loud and publicly? Reminds me…

HN discussion> It's quite reasonable not to care, but it's still good to know. I agree entirely. They claim to be outside of UK jurisdiction for a number of bills, although I'm not qualified to judge the veracity of these claims - again from https://www.ivpn.net/blog/should-gibraltar-be-classified-as-... > Gibraltarian VPN service providers are not obliged to comply with the comprehensive UK laws regulating the information socie…

HN discussionIVPN rebuts that argument at some length: > What is the relationship between Gibraltar and UK? > The main relationship between Gibraltar and UK stems from the fact that the British monarch is the head of state of both Gibraltar and UK. However, such a relationship is not enough to make Gibraltar a part of UK. For example, no one argues that Andorra is a part of France although the President of France is the head of…

HN discussionThat's a Snowden reference, no? But yes, seven hops is about the minimum for any prudently private person, as I see it. But for true overkill, see https://www.ivpn.net/privacy-guides/onion-ssh-hosts-for-logi... It's not that hard to hit 30 hops, alternating VPNs and Tor onion services.

HN discussionI don't actually use OSX ;) Just for testing. See https://www.ivpn.net/privacy-guides/how-to-perform-a-vpn-lea... for what I did. I get the open-source concern. I prefer using stock OpenVPN. But if you're going to do that, you need to manage your DNS servers, and firewall leaks. I'm not aware that iVPN provides source code. You could ask them.

HN discussionWell, but then there's no crowding. You're the only user. And VPS providers are just as vulnerable as VPN services. You can setup an OpenVPN server on a VPS that's only reachable as a Tor onion service. You lease the VPS through Tor, as anonymously as possible. You pay with Bitcoin that's been mixed at least twice through Tor. See http://dbshmc5frbchaum2.onion/OpenVPN-Onion-VPS.html (using Tor, or a tor2web proxy).…
