Why HN links it
HN commenters repeatedly link this blog's post arguing against Ollama, usually as a bare link or slogan, and point readers to it in threads on local LLM setups and llama.cpp.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 20 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
Project write-ups, experiments, and things I wanted to exist.

What Hacker News says?
There's no official Qwen 3.8 4B (only 27B and 2.4T.. at least for now), so if not a typo you've downloaded some third party model/finetune. Also if you have less than 24GB VRAM, then ollama defaults to 4K context. If that "Qwen 3.8" uses thinking, it might be running out of context and forgetting what it was even answering mid-generation. If that's the case, then try increasing context size: https://docs.ollama.com/…

on “LFM2.5-24B-A2B: Built for fast on-device agents”I use Llama.cpp and OpenAI-style API of course (who doesn't, unless you use Ollama perhaps?) Ollama sucks, they dropped ROCm support for my card out of the blue, and the Vulkan replacement wasn't ready. The developer just shrugged and didn't care about the people affected so I moved to llama-server. Also, here's some other reasons to avoid ollama: https://sleepingrobots.com/dreams/stop-using-ollama/ And really, olla…

on “Run Qwen3.8 27B locally: real numbers from my Mac Studio”Ollama is not recommended [0], use llama.cpp or more specifically Unsloth Studio which wraps llama.cpp and which has an API mode you can use to hook into Hermes or another agent. Unsloth make both the Studio and the quants which fix various issues with many models [1] as well as implementing new features like MTP and QAT support much sooner than other teams. In general you should read r/LocalLLaMa as it has a lot of…

on “Running local models is good now”My system is quite similar to your, my GPU is a 6950 XT and CPU a Ryzen 5 2600x, same amount of RAM, and I feel your pain. It sounds very similar to my experience from a few months ago. When it comes to tool calling, there are multiple possible issues; some models have borked templates bundled with the model file, some models are not trained on tool calling, some agent harnesses doesn't support the tool call output…

on “Ask HN: Has anyone replaced Claude/GPT with a local model for daily coding?”Ollama is not a good choice - https://sleepingrobots.com/dreams/stop-using-ollama/ As for oprncode, doesn't the system prompt eat too much of the context? Local models are really constraint in regards contex, and opencode AFAIR uses a 10k of it or some thing close.
