What Hacker News says?

  1. You act as if the alternative to drones (20 year old kids with guns) never kills the wrong person. Yvain's essay asking "what if drones came first" is highly relevant here. http://squid314.livejournal.com/338607.html?thread=9878703

  3. Fine members of the audience, I give you the Myers Shuffle. http://squid314.livejournal.com/329561.html Will you take the free space kaltai, or can we stop trying to use rhetorical tricks like talking dismissively about (rather than to) and trying to out-meta the other?

  5. This sounds like "epistemic learned helplessness" - in which you realize that, in domains you're not a specialist in, you can't really discriminate between convincing-sounding arguments of different smart people, so you give up trying and default to whatever is the current majority consensus. See http://squid314.livejournal.com/350090.html .

I declare the Worst Argument In The World to be this: "If we can apply an emotionally charged word to something, we must judge it exactly the same as a typical instance of that emotionally charged word."Well, it sounds dumb when you put it like that. 9. as if the U.S. is a homogenous culture Compared to Europe, it certainly is. From a merely linguistic viewpoint, in North America there's English and Spanish (Ok, and native american languages, but they're really not much spoken). In Western and Northern Europe, there's French, Italian, Dutch, German, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish. The thing is, identity is a matter of contrast. See this : http://squid314.l…

  11. > If you are claiming these do not exist... I'm not. ju-st is implying either that we don't know how to build power plant sized fission reactors, that we've never built and operated one successfully and safely for decades , or both. All projects in the US have delays and cost overruns. I addressed this in my reply to his comment. That doesn't mean that the design and construction of the thing being constructed isn't…

  13. I found the pictures fascinating, but the accompanying text marred my enjoyment. Considering the circumstances of the Fukushima disaster, the anti-nuclear sentiment really irked me. The Tōhoku earthquake & tsunami killed close to 20,000 people. The author completely ignored those victims. Instead, he focused on Fukushima, which will cause around 150 deaths from cancers. For every tragedy created by Fukushima, there…

  17. This is an instance of the Worst Argument In The World ( http://squid314.livejournal.com/323694.html ). Neurotransmitter imbalances (e.g. clinical depression, AD[H]D, anxiety disorders, etc.) are not diseases. This doesn't mean that people who have them are okay ; it just means that thinking of them in terms of what you normally associate with the label 'disease' will lead your thoughts astray. Instead, neurotransmi…

  19. The whole notion of desert or lack thereof seems pretty iffy to me. Nobody accomplishes anything without some degree of luck and help from others, which at minimum includes having been born with a brain and having been fed as a baby, and if you believe in biological and economical determinism beyond that it becomes very hard to say who deserves what. In practice most people seem to evaluate how deserving someone is…

  21. Unless you could produce identical clones that only differed in terms of the relevant genes in question, and raised them in very similar environments, then neural nets will have extreme difficulty factoring out all the confounding variables. Even with large sample sets, given all rarity of the genetic combinations etc. Given the vast complexity of all this, really the only low hanging fruit could come from determini…

You may find the following article interesting: http://squid314.livejournal.com/329561.html > This tendency reaches its most florid manifestation in the "ideological bingo games". 29. From http://squid314.livejournal.com/260949.html : Contrary to popular belief, you can put a dollar value on human life. That dollar value is $5.8 million. Denying this leads to terrible consequences. Let me explain. I'm guessing these 404 pages aren't at all cost-effective. The chances of saving a life are incredibly low, and the cost of implementing and maintaining them is pretty high. Also, there's value lost to…
