What Hacker News says?

  1. Grate post! Hey, check my websight about "WordPress blogs" at https://www.sevarg.net/ I think youll like it! ;) Are you sure comments are still desirable? Isn't step 1 of the internet anymore "Never read the comments"? That said, I did actually work out a solution for "static site with dynamic comments" on my blog that could easily be done for a lot of people if they're willing to use a hosted service. Discourse (th…

  3. It can be cash flow positive if you do a bunch of the work yourself and plan accordingly. https://www.sevarg.net/tag/solar/ From my point of view the nice thing about it is reducing or eliminating recurring expenses. Once your recurring expenses drop below passive income you are pretty well set.

  5. I built a "four filter fan box" this year when the smoke started rolling in (off MERV 13 filters, I think?), and have also gone about getting the measurement devices to verify that, yes, it really does work! I used a round fan, and a lot of tape to seal things to the fan, though it appears this might not matter as much as I thought. The filter area is sufficient that the fan doesn't really struggle - fan motors burn…

  7. I've been using Lockdown for a month or two now with the beta, and did some writing on it: https://www.sevarg.net/2022/07/20/ios16-lockdown-mode-browse... Results of enabling it and using my phone as I normally would: - Some websites don't display images. I've no idea what they encode to, but they won't display. Fine, don't care. - Animated GIFs don't play in Messages when coming in via SMS (perhaps iMessage too, ha…

  9. > I'm just looking for an indoor air quality monitor for temperature, humidity, co2 and ideally pm2.5 and pressure. If you don't want it to be "connected," try a TemTop P1000. I've torn one apart, and I have it in my office right now - it seems to do what it says on the tin sanely. Temperature, humidity, PM2.5, PM10, and CO2 levels. I have another TemTop unit and they generally agree within some reasonable margin of…

  11. > As a counterpoint to "throwaway cars", when they don't need repairs they do seem to be able to do a million miles or more with comparitively little maintenance. It was a reference to an old post of mine ( https://www.sevarg.net/2016/03/05/is-tesla-building-throwawa... ) - and, I actually agree with you that they do have million-mile grade drivetrains. It's just that the rest of the car is poor quality. That's fine…

  15. I can give you a concrete example of why I have my inverters connected to a network. And I'm pretty damned hostile to network connected things in the first place... I built my solar array myself - a big ground mount array, string inverters[0]. This went fine, and then a few years later, I started getting arc fault warnings. These were intermittent, but the inverter would respond by shutting down entirely, then gradu…

  17. > The second reason that I’ll write is to learn about something. It’s one thing to hand-wave one’s way through a presentation. It’s another to commit pen to paper (well, bytes to disk) and explain something. Quite often I’ll realise that there’s a gap—or gaps—in my knowledge that I need to explore first before I can properly write about something, and that’s the very reason that I do it. This is a very good reason t…

  19. Yeah, look at the Sonim XP3+/XP5+ (depending if you want a flip phone or candybar). Rugged, Android-Go powered "Call/SMS/MMS" devices, week and a half on battery if you leave it on constantly, hotspot, and you can , if you insist, sideload apps. Just, don't expect any modern Android app to be usable on a 240x320 screen with keyboard input only. If you use a Bluetooth mouse, it's marginally less-awful, but still, don…

  29. Hey, they recently redid the user interface for it! I mean, yeah, the new interface is unusable with anything under a Xeon workstation, and it's very mobile editing focused, for a blogging platform, and it drove me and a variety of other people off Blogger entirely, but... they've not just left it alone. That would have been an improvement over what they did to it. My extensive thoughts on their "improvements" here:…
