Why HN links it

HN readers link tableau.com for its product, pricing, student licence and learn/blog pages on data visualization, such as colour choice. Most comments discuss Tableau's licensing cost and product rather than the pages.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 33 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

  3. I stopped teaching Tableau because of the licensing costs to my students. Tableau feels more polished than PowerBI although BI has pretty much reached feature parity with Tableau. The problem is the licensing costs. PowerBI is very affordable ($10 a month) while Tableau is not($70 and UP). Tableau is basically saying, unless you have a corporation paying for the license err SAAS subscription do not bother to use us.…

  5. Feedback on your homepage, https://meltano.com/ There's no single visual on it :( Please show what kind of results one can get with this product. Contrast with https://www.tableau.com/ , which has a sample graph and "See it in action" right at beginning.

  7. I dont want to start a rant against Tableau. It's a powerhouse. It's a great superior software. But when it comes to optimizing cost and comparing the total cost of ownership and opportunity to stop paying for Tableau server license we voted in favor of Superset and mix of Reactjs+Echarts widgets. https://www.tableau.com/products/server If you have money, dedicated team of data analytics who are already familiar wit…

  25. The product is awesome. I made some really neat visualizations and analyses with it during an MBA project using the 15-day trial. But it's ridiculously expensive - $1000 per year with some real limitations on how many data sources you can connect. If I could dabble with it for $50/year I would. $1000 though? That limits their market tremendously to big companies only. It's hard enough to get an $80 tool approved. --…

  29. > The thought that our future relies now more in Google's product decisions is scary. At least in this case, Google's product decisions are counter-balanced by the variety of enterprise contracts Looker is already beholden to. Which should help to temper any abrupt surprises. That said Azure has embedded PowerBI[1], AWS has embedded Quicksight[2], and Tableau even offers an embedded analytics service[3]. So you're f…
