Why HN links it
HN readers mostly link TinyPilot's site as a KVM-over-IP option built on a Raspberry Pi. Its posts cover building the device, product redesigns, and the creator's sale of the business.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 27 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
Never lose access. TinyPilot is remote KVM over IP with a serial console and LAN monitoring in one box per site, backed by US-based support.

What Hacker News says?
Thanks for the feedback! > If we select the "Product" option from the top menu, we're taken directly to the order page for the TinyPilot Voyager 2. If we go to the root page for the products ( https://tinypilotkvm.com/product/ ) we get a page not found!!! Are you talking about if you manually change the URL? I don't think anything links to the /product/ route. > Although you're also selling something else, the TinyP…

HN discussionThanks for reading! I appreciate the feedback, but the hard part about feedback like this is: how do I identify who's right? Half the people in the thread are saying the old design is better, and half are saying the new design is better. If I could flip a switch and try the design you're describing and see how it affects sales, I'd try it, but taking professional photographs and redesigning the site is several thous…

HN discussionSome feedback from a person who is the target audience of your product: https://tinypilotkvm.com/illustrations/tinypilot-overview-il... is the most prominent image on your site and of little value in my opinion. Rather than have a sketch that looks like it very well could just be a stock image (and my brain is trained to ignore this type of image), I recommend having actual photos that show the same scene. A photo o…

HN discussionHuge respect for your TinyPilot project (especially for the free version of the software over at https://github.com/tiny-pilot/tinypilot ), but I think you were ripped off and not enough care/attention was given to your page :-( I'm not trying to be one of those people who say, you gave too much money for something I would create in 2 weeks with only 4k, but I'm trying to give a friendly advice to a fellow software…

HN discussionI make one that I put a lot of effort into documenting: https://github.com/tiny-pilot/tinypilot It's pretty easy to extend since it's just Python and vanilla HTML/JS/CSS, so there's not much of a toolchain to install. You can buy it pre-made for $399 or make a DIY one for under $100. https://tinypilotkvm.com/blog/build-a-kvm-over-ip-under-100

on “DeskHop – Fast Desktop Switching”> I looked up the CPU for one of the devices. It's the same one used in Raspberry Pi 4. It's the same CPU because inside it is a Raspberry Pi 4. We publish instructions for people to build their own.[0] > he has a privileged background (worked at Google) and somehow that helped him tap into a market of people who don't know that a good price for a Raspberry Pi 4 is $35, not $350 or $400. I can see $65 with a nice ca…

on “My sixth year as a bootstrapped founder”Thanks for reading! > I am curious about your ad spend. I noticed that it dropped 24%. I added a few more details about that in a different reply: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39398746 > Can you talk about your strategy for marketing your business? on “Show HN: TinyPilot – Build a KVM over IP using a Raspberry Pi”Yeah, I’ll admit there’s some paranoia about losing access after a botched upgrade. I’m considering investing in a https://tinypilotkvm.com/ , but that can wait till I’ve lost ssh at least once. I’m not hosting aws on the thing so I can afford to play it fast and loose :)

on “JetKVM – Control any computer remotely”NanoKVM looks really neat, thank you! I take it you're in the US? Because it seems I (in Europe) could order it from Aliexpress, see the link on https://github.com/sipeed/NanoKVM . EDIT: It seems the NanoKVM is struggling with one of the most fundamental KVM tasks, though: https://github.com/sipeed/NanoKVM/issues/594 I really liked the PCIe form factor, but it looks like I'll have to go for https://tinypilotkvm.com/…

on “A terrible way to jump into colocating your own stuff”> Next, I looked at commercial KVM over IP solutions. They provide similar functionality to Dell's iDRAC, but they're external devices that connect to a computer's keyboard, video, and mouse ports (hence the name KVM). Sadly, they're even more expensive, ranging in price from $500 to $1000 per unit. And the site's commercial product is $400, which is also quite expensive. https://tinypilotkvm.com/product/tinypilot-v…

on “TinyPilot: Build a KVM over IP for Under $100”There are a couple of vendors (including me[0]) that offer a circuit board that splits the Pi's USB-C port into separate data and power ports with reverse current protection. There are cables that do the same thing, but they don't provide reverse current protection. If there's a voltage difference between the USB port on your target system and the PSU feeding your Raspberry Pi, you can mess up the system's USB port…

on “Show HN: A low power 1U Raspberry Pi cluster server for inexpensive colocation”Oh, that's interesting. I'm doing something like that now, except the premium features are just in a Pro version.[0] There are only a handful of purchases per month of the Pro version, and I've wondered whether I should scrap it for some other model. It's possible that even though people don't buy the software standalone, it's part of what makes people purchase hardware kits from me, as the hardware packages all inc…

on “Ask HN: How does one go about bringing a hardware product to market?”I've been doing this for the past 18 months with a Raspberry Pi-based network administration tool called TinyPilot. I originally launched it on HN in 2020[0], and there was enough interest that I turned it into a real product[1] and have been iterating on it ever since. Like you, my background is in software, and I had no hardware experience aside from using the Raspberry Pi as a cheap server on a few projects. I've…

on “NanoKVM: Affordable, Multifunctional, Nano RISC-V IP-KVM”Glad to hear it! Regarding power, you can get a USB-C splitter[0], which will allow you to give your Pi the full 3 Amps. The TinyPilot Voyager 2 has this built-in, and the PoE one makes it so you don't need AC power at all. [0] https://tinypilotkvm.com/blog/build-a-kvm-over-ip-under-100#...

on “BliKVM PCIe puts a computer in your computer”> In general, we’re weathering the shortage very well, and the supply of mainline Raspberry Pi computers, Zeros and our other products have not been affected (we’re very good at pipelining). This is a surprisingly false claim. I make a Pi-based product,[0] and there have been Pi shortages throughout 2021. Right now, I'm struggling to find any vendor that has Pi 4B 2GB or 4GB for anything more than one per customer.…
