Travis Oliphant writes Technical Discovery, a personal blog at technicaldiscovery.blogspot.com about programming, data and science. Since 2011, 19 different Hacker News readers have linked it 23 times, most often “Thoughts on porting NumPy to PyPy”. The last post was in 2018, but the archive is still widely read.
Too few sampled comments (9) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN readers link Travis Oliphant's blog, written by the original NumPy author, for posts on NumPy funding, porting NumPy to PyPy, and why conda exists. Comments cite it as background on scientific Python.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 9 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
Original NumPy author here. I have a lot to say on this topic, given that it has literally consumed my life over the past 20 years. You can go here for some thoughts about some of this: http://technicaldiscovery.blogspot.com/ There are several articles there that relate but in particular http://technicaldiscovery.blogspot.com/2012/10/continuum-and... and http://technicaldiscovery.blogspot.com/2017/02/numfocus-past..…

HN discussionThis post made me think of this article: http://technicaldiscovery.blogspot.com/2011/10/thoughts-on-p... For those who don't know, Travis Oliphant is the creator of NumPy and(?) SciPy. It's a good read and it puts some of the issues with a port into perspective.

HN discussionIt's likely to take a while. See Travis's post: http://technicaldiscovery.blogspot.com/2011/10/thoughts-on-p... There are two main problems he sees - numpy is a moving target (as it continues to evolve), and the C-API of numpy is one of its most useful features (as lots of numpy extensions like Scipy and matplotlib may require it).

HN discussionThere's more inertia here than you may be thinking. See this recent HN headliner about the difficulty of getting the NumPy/SciPy community to merely move from CPython to PyPy: http://technicaldiscovery.blogspot.com/2011/10/thoughts-on-p... If that's a challenge, good luck getting a lot of NotProgrammers to move to a completely different language. Besides, if I may be blunt, who in Rubyland cares if these guys are on…

HN discussionIf anyone needs more color, Travis, the CEO of continuum and the author of NumPy just wrote a great post explaining why conda exists, and why virtualenv and pip aren't sufficient for the scientific python community. http://technicaldiscovery.blogspot.com/2013/12/why-i-promote...

HN discussionNumPy is not fast enough, that's the problem ( http://technicaldiscovery.blogspot.com/2011/07/speeding-up-p... ). In scientific applications, the code calling it is rarely the bottleneck-- if it is you might be doing something wrong. The biggest bottlenecks I encounter are a) computation and b) data serialization / deserialization (especially if a database of some kind is involved)
