What Hacker News says?

  1. Ola, fellow YC founders. Surely you have seen Windmill since you refer to it in the comments below. It looks like Hatchet, being a lot more recent, has currently a subset of what Windmill offers, albeit with a focus solely on the task queue and without the self-hosted enterprise focus. So it looks more like a competitor to Inngest than of Windmill. We released workflows as code last week which was the primary differ…

  3. To clarify - you're right, this is a long time in a message/event queue. It's not an eternity in a task queue which supports DAG-style workflows with concurrency limits and fairness strategies. The reason for this is you need to check all of the subscribed workers and assign a task in a transactional way. The limit on the Postgres level is probably on the order of 5-10ms on a managed PG provider. Have a look at: htt…

  11. Anyone considering windmill needs to look at this first: https://www.windmill.dev/docs/advanced/local_development . Why do I need to "sync" with windmill? Why is there an IDE built into windmill? Why is this so convoluted? It's like it's starting with the goal of lock-in before even developing a good product or finding market fit.

  15. Windmill is pretty lightweight and easy to deploy. https://www.windmill.dev/ you can configure it to have a single worker on the same server as the ui and database.

  17. This is huge and comes at the right moment for me. The Web Browser part is far less important to me than being able to compile programs into small and autonomous wasm binaries. I am indeed building an open-source (soon) business app platform based on code: https://windmill.dev Right now you can define any scripts and run them, but behind the scene, the way the workers work is that they have a static list of dependen…

  20. Just want to add, I followed pretty much the same path with Windmill [1], which is also in the developer tool space, and also open-source. Built everything solo for 5 months. I thought it would be impossible to get into YC, it is not and I was fortunate enough to join YC on the latest batch, on my first try [2]. Getting into YC changed the course of the company, increased many orders of magnitude my ambition and mad…

  22. While the execution model is very similar to Airflow, we're primarily targeting async jobs which are spawned from an application, while Airflow is primarily for data pipelines. The connector ecosystem of Airflow is very powerful and not something that we're trying to replace. That's not to say you can't use Hatchet for data pipelines - this is a common use-case. But you probably don't want to use Hatchet for big dat…

  25. This is super timely. Windmill ( https://windmill.dev ) used to only support webhooks to trigger code and flow jobs. We have just added email support building our own MX server, and wanted to add CDC change. We were gonna do it on Debezium but this will allow us to remove the need for a third-party service and just add this as a crate. Thank you supabase for open-sourcing this.

  26. We bet big on deno with Windmill (OSS platform to turn scripts into internal UI and workflows) [1][2] and are extremely pleased. The language design choices and the performances/caching strategies are a perfect match for building a distributed workflow runtime at scale. However, the compatibility with npm was the most requested feature. Before the compatibility mode with npm was released, we were about to build a co…
