What Hacker News says?

  1. What about Wire[1] and Matrix[2]? Both self-hostable or hosted with E2E encryption. If I'm not mistaken Wire has E2E calls too, but I dunno... At least E2E chat is better than MS, Google or Zoom. [1]: https://wire.com [2]: https://matrix.org/

  5. I used wire before is opensourced parts of the backend. I thought it was well designed and interesting. They claim to be the only video conferencing with end to end encryption that is opensource. https://wire.com/en/features/encrypted-voice-video/ Has anyone followed wire more closely?

  9. Well, there are two options: notification option and confirmation option. Moxie correctly assumes that confirmation option (require manual confirmation to resend if key changes) should either be enabled for everyone or disabled for everyone, as its state can be determined passively by the server. But it depends on the notification option. His conclusion is that confirmation option should be disabled for everyone bec…

  13. People are talking about secure alternative matrix/riot, mattermost, zullip... not that i have anything to do with them but Wire https://wire.com is pretty impressive (you can geek out on haskell backend). In small org we have been using riot/matrix and it is great. Works well but it is more like modern IRC. It doesnt have too much ui sugar. Mattermost on the other hand looks cool but had slow clients and there was…

  17. I use Wire[0] now. It offers IM, voice messages, voice & video calls, & a decent set of unobtrusive "silly" features (voice filters, ability to send drawings, etc). Finding people is generally easy but for some reason, it will sometimes not find someone when you type the entire username but will find him/her before you finish typing the username out. The best part is it works well on Android without GApps & seems to…

  19. > the E2E encryption that is in there is not as well tested There's an open $200k bounty for years now. Some "expert in the field" (who just happens to work for not one but two competitors -- yes, I'm looking at you, /u/moxie) posted a blog post right afterwards, about a competition not being the same as a proper design / security audit, and that's correct. But I've seen people try and fail over the years: the crypt…

  21. Yes but: Not standard End-to-End and the E2E encryption that is in there is not as well tested. Also, the mobile phone-less use is great but it requires plain text messages to be stored on Telegram servers. I think Signal's (and WA's) solution is pretty elegant. For non-phone related use I'd go for Wire https://wire.com/en/ encryption wise.

  25. I think you missed my entire point. I'm happy there's alternatives. Competition is good. But that's beside my point. Maybe to make the same mistake I'm critiquing, am I understanding things correctly? Does the free version of Wire not encrypt messages at rest?[0]. Seems weird to not make the messages encrypted when they're on device. I think this is going to be a deal breaker for people because they don't want their…

  27. Since nobody's mentioned Wire, it's not a 1:1 alternative but it's close in terms of chat. I don't think any 1:1 alternative to KeyBase will rise up anytime soon, hosting git and files will be a bit to build up to. Website: https://wire.com/en/ Their backend is open source unlike KeyBase: https://github.com/wireapp/wire-server
