What Hacker News says?

  1. > It’s bad that Backblaze did not do their due diligence while integrating with Facebook pixel Here's the thing though, being a third party, due diligence means you constantly have to check what they're doing. Because otherwise how do you know when they suddenly change their script to do something entirely different? This is why having any 3rd party scripts on a dashboard service like this is in my view entirely ine…

  3. Most definitions of the 3-2-1 rule count the original data as one of the 3 copies [1][2][3] and don't go as far as to specify that you should be diversified against literal medium type. (Most recommend an external drive or NAS for your second local copy) The "my house was hit by lightning" case is covered pretty well by your 1 offsite backup. 1. https://www.acronis.com/en-us/articles/backup-rule/ 2. https://www.carb…

  7. Acronis, a german corporation, is implementing the GDPR too [0] and they recommend that if possible, you split backups per customer, if that is not practical atleast do your best to protect the data and don't keep it for unnecessary time frames. You should have a retention policy and encrypt your backups. [0]: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/blog/posts/backups-and-gdpr-ri... [A0]: http://www.gdprarticles.com/gdpr-arti…

  9. Acronis TrueImage ( http://www.acronis.com/trueimage ). Both backups and restores are amazingly fast -- in my case, 8 to 10 minutes for just under 60GB.

  11. Sorry for your loss. Here are my two cents... For complete system backup on Windows use Acronis [0], on MacOS use Carbon Copy Cloner [1] and on Linux Clonezilla [2]. Also never forget the 3-2-1 rule of backups [3], 3 copies, 2 local copies on different mediums and 1 copy offsite (cloud, remote) :-) [0] https://www.acronis.com/en-us/personal/computer-backup/ [1] https://bombich.com/ [2] https://clonezilla.org/ [3] ht…

  12. Most Delphi examples I see these days are actually modern, recently written malware samples. It statically compiles into a tiny binary which has a weird ABI which flies under the radar of AV software looking for programs up to no good. What's not to love for this purpose if you are an adversarial actor? The vega/buran strain of ransomware malware comes to mind as a well known example from the past few years [1] [1]…

  13. An append-only backup is not by definition non-compliant with GDPR. It's important that the individual can be assured that their personal data will not be restored back to production systems (except in certain rare instances, e.g., the need to recover from a natural disaster or serious security breach). In such cases, the user’s personal data may be restored from backups, but the controller will take the necessary s…

And it costs $5.83/month for 500GB (not super cheap, but the 500GB offer is still doable)? https://www.acronis.com/en-us/personal/computer-backup/#buy Neat. I'll definitely be checking this out, thanks a bunch!
