Too few sampled comments (14) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
Mostly bare links or passing mentions in GPU cloud threads: its GPU cloud pricing page, and a blog post on the Weights & Biases acquisition, cited as price sources or background.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 14 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

HN discussion> is it a matter of absolute capacity still being insufficient for current model sizes This. Additionally, models aren't getting smaller, they are getting bigger and to be useful to a wider range of users, they also need more context to go off of, which is even more memory. Previously: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42003823 It could be partially the DC, but look at the rack density... to get to an equal amoun…

HN discussionSlurm is definitely still dominant, but OpenAI has been using k8s for training for many years now¹, and there are various ways to run slurm on top of Kubernetes, including the recent SUNK from coreweave² at my company we use slurm "directly" for static compute we rent or own (i.e. not in a public cloud), but are considering using Kubernetes because that's how we run the rest of the company, and we'd rather invest mo…

HN discussionThe whole thing is nuts. They have the wrong costs multiplied by the wrong time period to get the wrong answers. https://coreweave.com/gpu-cloud-pricing says an A100 40GB NVLink is $2.06 whereas the article says $2.39. That's $1483.20 a month, whereas the article says $1200 and should say $1720 if they'd got the maths right.

HN discussionI was using https://www.coreweave.com/gpu-cloud-pricing the A4000s here, with 20ish steps 512x512 and I think it was close to a 1-2 s IIRC. There are some consumer cards that can get close i'm sure with some tweaking of image size, steps and other SD tuning.

HN discussionI was curious so I tried to answer this question --- Training Llama 3 models emitted 2290 tons CO2e ( https://github.com/meta-llama/llama3/blob/main/MODEL_CARD.md ), and took 7.7 million GPU hours. Those GPU hours are for H100s, which consume 700W. So the conversion is approximately 2290 / (7.7e6 * 3600 * 700 / 1e9) ~= 0.12 tons CO2e per GPU-gigajoule. A100s (what Huggingface offers) consume 400W ( https://www.nvidi…

HN discussionI think you either have to deal with big prices or actually run the model yourself. There are a lot of GPU renting services that are cheap, like http://coreweave.com/ and https://vast.ai/

on “Ask HN: What do you use for ML Hosting”Author here. I've seen the docs you linked to: Slurm uses "gang scheduling" to mean something specific (timesliced oversubscription where jobs alternate on shared resources). I'm using the term in its broader CS sense: all-or-nothing co-scheduling of related processes across multiple processors [1]. This is the definition used across the K8s ecosystem e.g. Volcano [2], Kueue [3], and its Coscheduling plugin all defi…
