  5. Oh jesus, my site got submitted and is #1 on HN again. It kind of amazes me that a guide that begins with a Thich Nhat Hanh (buddhist monk) quote can bring out such heated debate. A few things to clarify: * The before/after flyers were taken from real life. These were printed out and tacked up to community boards and the like. * One reason why I think the right poster is better is that it looks nicer on the surface…

  11. > repulsed by the idea of using a framework I think this is one of the memes in the community which is starting to be reconsidered. You're not alone in seeing these downsides, and people are starting to write about it more (code and words). Things like Fulcro or even Datomic Cloud are very interesting developments in this regard. But yes, I want to cover testing, web development, and more. Right now I'm working on an in-depth explanation of reducers. edit: also, clojure applied is a good book for what you're talking about

Here are sites where I've found jobs: http://jobs.rubynow.com http://jobs.37signals.com http://bostonrb.org/jobs If you also just google "rails jobs" you'll find the other useful rails job sites out there. Generally speaking, five year olds should not be choosing databases for anything critical. But I agree that Datomic and company can do better with their marketing and general product description. 21. also worth checking out is http://logoworks.com/ . They're more expensive (logo packages start at $300) but still cheap. They did my logo for http://www.flyingmachinestudios.com . I think Guy Kawasaki also has used and recommended them.

  23. I really believe that expressing gratitude every day has a positive effect, so much so that I made a clojure-based site, http://gratefulplace.com/ (and wrote about the code at http://www.flyingmachinestudios.com/programming/dissecting-g... ). For the past year I've spent a few minutes every morning thinking about what I'm grateful for and it's had a big positive influence on my life. I'm definitely happier.

  27. I just posted another technique for DRYing up variable initialization in rails controllers: http://www.flyingmachinestudios.com/2008/09/06/dry-up-contro... The method I used doesn't let you use method names instead of instance variables, but then again I think it's actually better to use instance variables. In my code I mostly use instance variables for active record objects, whereas I use methods galore. The little…
