Why HN links it

HN readers link David Graeber's essays and books on anarchism, bullshit jobs, value and early human history, often to back points about work, play and politics.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 20 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

It all started with the horror of David’s death; then there was Carnival4David, then this site was created by David’s family. David Graeber Institute was established in 2022. However, davidgraeber.org remains a separate site, aiming to collect and share as much about David as possible independently

What Hacker News says?

  1. If it becomes "just a hobby", it will become a privilege, too. Someone here linked Graeber essay https://davidgraeber.org/articles/value-as-the-importance-of... . I read it with interest, although it's a bit abstract. I wish he was still alive, he would have a field day with AI.

  9. There's an interesting article by David Graeber on how we characterize play and fun among animals: https://davidgraeber.org/articles/whats-the-point-if-we-cant... . I can't say that I've understood it all, but he appears to criticize scientists for not thinking about play seriously, and instead reducing most aspects of animal behavior to things like survival, fitness, and evolutionary pressure.

  11. Did he speak about the pandemic much? I think the responses to the pandemic from anarchists are interesting. They seem to range the entire spectrum: from the anti government conspiracy theorist to the enthusiastic state coercion supporter. Maybe the academic theorists were more level headed? He seemed to be saying "lets see what good can come from it afterwards", but I'm curious if there's more he said. I did see a…

  17. This article is also operating under the assumption that all "work" is equally fulfilling on every level of Maslow's heirarchy. But much of what we work on nowadays has very little attachment to the actual physical sphere of connections, people, objects, community, etc that we interact with daily. [1] This makes a large portion of modern work simply not worth doing, because of how little it fulfills our needs. It go…

  20. Graber was an anarchist and a leftist. For example, quoting from https://davidgraeber.org/articles/is-your-job-bullshit-on-ca... > I’ve been working with people who’ve become big advocates for a universal basic income. It’s not the only solution, but it conforms with my political instincts. People think that is odd because I’m an anarchist. Why would I want a policy where the government would just give people money?…
