HN discussion> But rarely from a wget script without a session cookie If you do scraping on a large scale you emulate a human very well to bypass bot protection. Setting dynamic but accurate user agents, setting proper sessions and persisting it, emulating the TLS handshake ( https://fingerprint.com/blog/what-is-tls-fingerprinting-tran... ) and emulating mouse movements to be more "human like" ( https://github.com/oxylabs/OxyMou…

HN discussionI’m very familiar both - exactly how can apps track you - without your permission that the web can’t? And your example of how Facebook can track you by knowing what links you clicked on off the site from the app, of course Facebook could do that from the web. There are at least a dozen ways to do fingerprinting o the web https://fingerprint.com/blog/browser-fingerprinting-techniqu... And what do you think is going t…

HN discussionFYI I wouldn’t say that the Mullvad browser is any better at anti-fingerprinting than Librewolf. I always point people to http://fingerprint.com/ so they can see how difficult it is to beat even JS based tracking and this doesn’t even get into the server-side methods (i.e. just fetching a stylesheet) of tracking users. That’s not to say you shouldn’t use a browser that blocks ads etc but I don’t think people should…

HN discussionThe Tor Browser won’t effectively stop fingerprinting, if anything it makes you more unique due to the low amount of people worldwide using it, and then you add points of data by using different DNS providers, extensions etc. The Tor Browser as a privacy measure is likely no better than a normal browser with uBlock if you’re also using it like a “normal” browser, signing into the same accounts you always use etc. My…

HN discussionI have experienced the same with Google and with PayPal, whenever I used Tor. When I afterwards visited those sites using my normal browser I got Captchas. They are actively fighting attempts to avoid fingerprinting. Also, I am pretty sure that no browser protects against getting fingerprinted. Test with https://fingerprint.com/ .

HN discussionFingerprinting is really bad for privacy and the defenses against it are not there. See https://fingerprint.com . Tor Browser defeats it but I don't think there's a highly usable browser like Brave you can use and prevent being tracked by it.

HN discussionThe more egregious and frankly disgusting one is https://fingerprint.com IMO this service should straight up be made illegal. I love the tagline they have of supposedly "stopping fraud" or "bots", when it's obvious it's just privacy invasive BS that straight up shouldn't exist, least of all as an actual company with customers.
