Why HN links it
HN readers link nx.dev as a pointer to Nx, a tooling suite for JavaScript and TypeScript monorepos with build caching, affected-project detection and framework plugins. Comments praise the tool, not the blog posts.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 22 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
This is the approach I’m taking with https://rx-store.github.io/rx-store/ We use http://Nx.dev to split up example apps and libs into separate packages. I have a “visualizer” package, a “devtools” (for use in browser), will potentially add an electron app etc later

HN discussionA while ago I came across Nx ( https://nx.dev/ ) from Nrwl, which sounds a lot like this. It's open source and has a lot of tooling for managing monorepo's. I think they even worked with Google for it. Altough I think the main focus was JS projects (as far as I know).

HN discussionFrom https://nx.dev/ : > 2.5 million developers use Nx every day > Over 70% of Fortune 500 companies use Nx to ship their products To quote Fargo: Whoa, daddy... Now that's what I call a rapidly degrading situation we weren't ready for. The second order fallout from this is going to be huge! Some people are going to be pretty glad they steered clear of AI stuff.

HN discussionIf you do go with TypeScript have a look at Nx. It's tooling around TypeScript monorepo that helps you do exactly what you want: write code once and share it between backend/multiple frontends. It suppports Express or NestJS in the backend and Angular, React, Web Components in the Frontend. https://nx.dev/ If you want to make it work with Ionic/NativeScript/Electron as well use xplat. https://github.com/nstudio/xplat

HN discussionIts about preventing unnecessary friction while its still entirely avoidable. Yes, naming things is hard but renaming things after the fact is _way_ harder. Nothing exists for Numerical Elixer right now, so now is the perfect time to make the change. I think the fact that a popular github repo ( https://github.com/nrwl/nx ), a domain ( https://nx.dev/ ), and loads of blog posts and tutorials exist for the current NX…

HN discussionCaching and sharing artifacts is usually the main culprit. My company has been using https://nx.dev/ for that. It works locally as well and CI and it just works. Our NX is pointed to store artifacts in GHA, but our GHA scripts don't do any caching directly, it is all handled by NX. It works so well I would even consider pulling a nodejs environment to run it in non-nodejs projects (although I haven't tried, probably…

HN discussionYou might consider NX if build times are an issue. It is monorepo based and includes computation caching[2] and incremental builds, but under the hood uses the angular build tools. We've found it pleasant to work with. [1] https://nx.dev/latest/angular/core-concepts/computation-cach...

HN discussionI feel like more people should look into Nrwl Nx to scaffold new projects: https://nx.dev/ It supports Angular, React, Next.js, Gatsby, Storybook, Cypress, and a lot more. Maybe people don't hear about it, or they stop after reading the word "monorepo", while Nx is also great for stand-alone projects.

HN discussionJust use react.... That's what I do - it is so much easier than trying to fight with Next.js. I have a large application and I use next.js for the landing pages (landing, tos, privacy, blog, login, etc..) - but for the core application after login, I just use vanilla react with react router. For me I keep these as separate applications as I don't want to load the entire app just for the landing page or login box. Ev…

HN discussionThe article barely mentioned the other tools like Lerna and Nx as if the author didn’t try them. For such a deep dive I would expect the author to check out the tools that will have solved many of the problems one could encounter setting up and using monorepos. I tried https://nx.dev/ in the past and it helped with many things. You should check it out.

on “Monorepos in JavaScript and TypeScript”> Well, I would say the biggest difference is while the watch mode you described runs all the tests for every change. This is not true though. Might depend on the test tooling used, but most of the ones I've used only run changed tests (either directly or through change detection via git, e.g. https://nx.dev/concepts/affected )

on “Monorepos will ruin your life – but they're worth it”I've been using Nx ( https://nx.dev/ ) for a while now, but primarily on a front end set of apps currently. While it started as a TS/JS monorepo tool, it has evolved into something that (they claim) can be used for just about any language. You will probably still see it's roots as a TS/JS based tool though. It's not been without it's challenges, but overall I'm fairly happy with it.
