What Hacker News says?

  1. There's a renewed interest in on-prem bare metal recently with a lot of different offerings helping to make various parts of the stack easier to manage. Awesome bare metal is a new repo created by Alex Ellis that tracks a lot of the projects: https://github.com/alexellis/awesome-baremetal Also we (Packet) just open sourced Tinkerbell, our bare metal provisioning engine: https://www.packet.com/blog/open-sourcing-tink…

  3. Try project Gardener. It's fully open source and uses kubernetes to run kubernetes control planes and manage underlying infrastructure across many infrastructure providers. Manage homogeneous kubernetes clusters across Azure, AWS, GCP, Alicloud, OpenStack, VMWare at scale. Kubernetes on bare metal with Packet Cloud or using open source metal-stack coming soon. Extensible for other infrastructures, contribute support…

  5. Who do you peer with in Europe? I see in the US you use Packet ( https://www.packet.com/ ) but I couldn't find any information about the EU, or do you focus on the US market for now? We're also a LIR and want to build an anycast network (we anonymize streaming data), any helpful resources you can share on this? Cool product btw! I think this will be a very interesting area in the coming years, the fact that you offe…

  11. I'll add that you should look for the PLUS skus, ie SFN-8522-PLUS. They come with all the fun stuff. Might also want to look at Packet. They offer bare metal cloud servers by the hour, some of which have Mellanox NICs in them[0]. I'm less familiar with Mellanox than SolarFlare, but I think they have a similar feature set. 17. Doesn't seem practical. It might be useful as a learning-framework for MPI / Supercomputer programming... but it wouldn't be a tool that I'd use personally. A practical baseline for anyone interested in ARM-compute, would be the Thunder X CPU (Cloud rental: https://www.packet.com/cloud/servers/c1-large-arm/ ). 48-cores per socket, 2x for 96-core servers. As another commenter said: the primary use of this NanoPi is t…

  19. Packet's blog post: https://www.packet.com/blog/ping-power-processors/ This is probably a good play for Equinix as it provides a lower barrier to entry to a segment of the market that they typically haven't engaged (Packet being largely profitable probably helps). In addition, I believe Packet already had presence in a number of Equinix datacenters so "landlord buys tenant" comes to mind...

  21. Realistically you probably want to just use QEMU for builds until you find yourself needing to scale to something like https://www.packet.com/cloud/servers/c1-large-arm/ If you're doing it just for the novelty or really want to do it on site natively at a reasonable cost check out the Jetson TX2 dev kit.
