Too few sampled comments (8) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

Linked for security and exploit write-ups, including a Windows POSIX subsystem post, a Pwn2Own Safari JavaScriptCore exploit analysis, Xbox JTAG boot ROM dumping, and scalable security education.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 8 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. HN hasn't focused on those topics in a long time, they rarely are on the front page. Skip the top 20 articles and you'll start to see some interesting content instead of all the VC & AI drivel. Hackaday is a content aggregator site that usually has more content on these topics - https://hackaday.com Or there are still some good old blogs out there with RSS feeds http://www.righto.com/ http://oldvcr.blogspot.com/ htt…

  3. Having grokked the abstract, I feel like can speculate a bit as to what is going on. Take this with a grain of salt; I have no clue what has actually been discovered. I believe that the researchers have found a way to remove PAC as a barrier to exploitation by disclosing PAC verification results via speculative execution. This is only useful to attackers going after a target that uses PAC, and those attackers will n…

Check out: https://blog.ret2.io/2018/09/11/scalable-security-education/ These guys have built an epic b0f research education platform - could be also sold as a cloud-based research platform for vuln developers Another one is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClcE-kVhqyiHCcjYwcpfj9w/vid... for mostly C/C++ overflow type education

  9. Pointer authentication has been around for several years already. As with many things in hardware, though, it takes time for the software ecosystem around it to mature. Still, I've found it to be quite influential. Here are a couple "real world" examples-- Project Zero had a blogpost about some of the weaknesses on the original Pointer Auth spec [0], and even had a follow up [1]. Here is an example of what some miti…

  11. There's not a lot of comments here, so I'll give a tl;dr: They found a "use after free" bug in JavaScriptCore due to some asnyc GC and used it to get RCE in Safari at Pwn2Own. By making a large array of arrays, and then reversing them, they interfered with the "mark" part of "mark and sweep", resulting in some of the arrays not being marked and therefore being swept (freed) and used for other things. Pretty picture…

  15. No. This one. [0]. Even before that, there are several other sandbox escapes that predated the one you posted. [1] [2] and this one [3] can be used to trivially escape its sandbox with either of these vulnerabilities. So it is not the magical silver bullet one may easily think it is.
