What Hacker News says?

  1. If people can't understand why this is happening, understand that Trudeau has been in power for 9 years and basically everything is worse than when he started. And if you want to say, "Blah blah it's happening in other countries", don't bother. We're becoming poorer when compared to all our peer countries. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-gdp-per-capita-rich-... https://economics.td.com/ca-productivity-bad-to…

  3. Drove up new car prices, too: https://economics.td.com/us-vehicle-sales "From an automotive standpoint, dealership inventory remains lean – currently sitting at a nine-year low and down 22% for year-ago levels – which has already led to some reversal in the very generous summer incentives", which indicates higher prices. I couldn't find pricing data. This new shortage + current shortages + low interest rates = high…

  5. Are you under the misconception that "Abundance" is social democracy? It isn't. It is a defense of the neoliberal status quo. It doesn't challenge authority or the economic order at all . It argues the opposite: we need to do more capitalism, more deregulation and more wealth hoarding. That's why it gets attention from the mainstream media and the Democratic Party's donors and power brokers. It's Democratic Reaganis…

  6. Even if those numbers are true, you do understand that is a very different situation than 25% tariff across the board, and 10% on energy for completely disingenuous reasons. If it wasn't for oil, natural gas, power Canada would be at a trade surplus with the US. Oil and Natural gas are not things are not easy to find replacement US based sources. https://economics.td.com/ca-canada-us-trade-balance

  7. Yeah I entered job market right after dot.com crash and 9/11; GFC was definitely worse overall across all markets. I made choices based upon that time that i really wish had gone another way (mostly risk aversion since everything seemed dicey). 8. Canada’s boycott is retaliation for unnecessary and irrational tariffs. Canada LNG, oil, potash, critical minerals, etc will instead go into the global market. There is nothing Canada sells they specifically need Americans to buy except perhaps electricity and auto parts/assemblies. > Last year, Canadian exports of energy products (oil, natural gas, power) to the U.S amounted to nearly $170 billion, or almost 1/3 of…

  9. > I wouldn't call it "some inflation". The living standard of the western middle class has been on the decline for a long, long time. IMHO the main problem nowadays, especially facing young people, is housing. Otherwise there is probably never been a greater time to be alive, generally speaking, than right now. If you believe there is, can you outline the year(s) in question and how they were better? As for inflatio…

  11. Lol sounds like my country (Canada). We're in a recession caused by the current government's 11 years of mismanagement but approval ratings are higher than ever because our government just blames the US. Meanwhile the gap between our peers and us is widening and certain Canadians (mostly boomers) just refuse to see the problem. Everyone I know has left the country and I've already got one foot out the door. https://…

  12. > But today's USD decline? Brutal. It almost makes me want to say, "it's happening!". I agree we're close, but we're not quite there yet. The bond market is punishing sovereign debt (Japan bond crisis), and there is evidence that billions of dollars of capital is willing to leave US treasuries to find something better. Gold and silver are up wildly; some may say overbought, but I think that only applies in the befor…
